Steven Adams, Thunder Agree on New Contract: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction
The Oklahoma City Thunder and center Steven Adams agreed to a long-term contract extension on Monday, the team announced.
The Thunder also announced an extension for shooting guard Victor Oladipo. Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, citing league sources, reported Adams' deal is for four years and $100 million.
"We are excited to extend our partnership with Steven and Victor," said general manager Sam Presti. "Both players represent the Thunder’s present and future, exhibiting the values that the Oklahoma community and our organization hold in high regard: hard work, team first, resiliency and citizenship."
Adams, 23, has established himself as one of the league's best young centers and a centerpiece for the Thunder alongside Russell Westbrook. He broke out in the 2015-16 postseason, averaging 10.1 points and 9.5 rebounds in 30.7 minutes per game, solidifying the team's defense and giving them a rugged, high-energy presence on the block.
He's continued that development this season, averaging 13 points, nine rebounds and 0.7 blocks per contest.
Adams' extension is the latest in what has been a transformative year for the Thunder. Superstar Kevin Durant signed with the Golden State Warriors over the summer, while Serge Ibaka was traded to the Orlando Magic for Oladipo, Ersan Ilyasova and Domantas Sabonis. And then Westbrook reaffirmed his commitment to Oklahoma City, signing an extension of his own.
Clearly, Adams is considered a vital piece for the Thunder's future, alongside MVP candidate Westbrook, Oladipo, Sabonis and Enes Kanter. His defensive impact makes him a key figure as the Thunder try to keep pace with the likes of the Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Clippers and Memphis Grizzlies, among others, in the competitive Western Conference.
