Fantasy Football Week 3: The Ultimate Guide to Sunday's Action

Eric MackSep 20, 2014

You don't think matchups can turn a great fantasy player into mush? Ask Peyton Manning. He learned the hard way in the Super Bowl against the Seattle Seahawks.

No one is going to sit Manning, Demaryius Thomas, Julius Thomas or perhaps even Montee Ball in fantasy Week 3, but that championship game last February gives an ominous outlook for those must-start options. Few go into Seattle as intriguing plays in fantasy football and come out productive.

We finalize Bleacher Report's in-depth look at Week 3 with The Ultimate Guide to Sunday's Action, where we present the Top 100 plays, comb through the damages on the injury report and outline starts, sits, sleepers, busts and last-minute waiver-wire options.

Teaser: The Super Bowl rematch between the Broncos and Seahawks might be referenced often in this slideshow.

Overall Rankings

1 of 6

It isn't yet the bye season—that begins next week—so there should be no reason you are stretching to fill out your starting lineup this Sunday. That means that guys expected to play at something less than 10 percent shouldn't have to be counted on.

Are you listening, Jamaal Charles (ankle) owners?

Doug Martin (knee) gave us an example of what we are talking about here. Martin missed Thursday night's game despite showing some progress in his return from a knee injury. It looked like he might be able to play. Instead, he was held out one more week, and his fantasy owners were left scrambling Thursday evening to make a move.

Don't get sucked in on Charles, particularly amid his slow start to 2014. Charles practiced some and is listed as questionable and a game-time decision for Sunday's Kansas City Chiefs game at the Miami Dolphins.

"Yeah, he did okay," Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said in his news conference Friday, per the Chiefs' official website. "Yeah he looked a little sore, but he did okay, you know. He worked a little bit yesterday, but he loosened up and he kind of went as it went. We'll just see how he does."

Fantasy owners shouldn't need to see whether Charles is active Sunday. Even if he plays, he is not going to be 100 percent.

That means prepare to sit Charles, your No. 1 pick, for Knile Davis, your late-round or Week 3 waiver-wire pickup. Martin's case Thursday night should be an example for you.

Davis should be good for at least 15 touches and at least a touchdown as the feature back in the running back-friendly Chiefs offense. Those touches were enough for Bleacher Report to rank him in the top 30 among the starts for Week 3 below.

(Ignore the fact that Martin remains in there at No. 34 and Roddy White at No. 45. We blew it on those, and FantasyPros.com won't allow us to hide those mistakes after the fact. We got sucked in on their potential to play Thursday night. Oops!)

Injury Report

2 of 6

Let the first slide be your warning. Jamaal Charles (ankle) is a risky start, even if he is active. So the same should be said for Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green, who left early in Week 2 with a toe injury that was supposed to knock him out of more action than just a few quarters of play.

Green was officially listed as probable on the NFL injury report Friday, per NFLMedia.com (credentials required). That is enough to start him in fantasy, but it might not be enough to truly trust him to star.

Week 2 is a great example. If Green's injury wasn't that serious, he wouldn't have sat out so much action. You might not want to start Week 3 waiver-wire favorite Mohamed Sanu over Green straight up, but you definitely should be considering Sanu as a sleeper for targets with Green less than 100 percent.

We break down the prominent injury question marks below, starting with the probables you likely can use as needed and following up with the questionables you probably shouldn't.

Note: All practice participation information comes from the official NFL injury report provided in that link above.

Probables

Quarterbacks

  • Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers (back): He practiced fully and is in no danger right now. That doesn't mean he is a great play against the Arizona Cardinals, though. Sit him if you have a health alternative in a more favorable matchup.
  • Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys (back): We don't believe his offseason back surgery is to blame for his slow start as much as the emphasis on the running game now with DeMarco Murray to help play keep away from a shaky defense.
  • Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens (illness): He is fine and a solid fill-in in standard leagues or a must-start option in two-quarterback formats.

Running Backs

  • Marshawn Lynch, Seattle Seahawks (back): This isn't enough to sit him, but it could be enough to make sure you have Robert Turbin and Christine Michael (hamstring) in reserve to make it through the upcoming bye season.
  • Joique Bell, Detroit Lions (knee): He was limited in practice all week, but he is expected to play. The matchup is intriguing if you need him in your lineup.
  • Andre Ellington, Arizona Cardinals (foot): He played a week ago, so he is good to go in that regard. The fact that he is facing the San Francisco 49ers run defense should be more disconcerting.
  • Toby Gerhart, Jacksonville Jaguars (foot): His full participation in practice Friday was timely. He is a solid start against the Indianapolis Colts run defense at home. The Colts have allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to fantasy backs through two weeks, per FFToday.com.
  • Carlos Hyde, San Francisco 49ers (calf): The injury isn't serious, but the matchup is enough to sit him, especially with Frank Gore not yet banged up.
  • Christine Michael, Seattle Seahawks (hamstring): He is seeing his first action of the season, but he is third string right now and merely a bye-week replacement option down the road.

Wide Receivers

  • A.J. Green, Cincinnati Bengals (toe): He might be too good to sit as a probable, but that injury was agitated last Sunday and could cost you in Week 3. Consider alternatives.
  • Julian Edelman, New England Patriots (back): That matchup in the home opener against the Oakland Raiders is too enticing.
  • T.Y. Hilton, Indianapolis Colts (groin): Ditto here in Jacksonville.
  • Andre Johnson, Houston Texans (ankle): And here at the New York Giants.
  • Cordarrelle Patterson, Minnesota Vikings (chest): And here at New Orleans.
  • Kelvin Benjamin, Carolina Panthers (knee): He is Cam Newton's No. 1 weapon on the outside, but you might not trust him against the Pittsburgh Steelers defense, which is fifth against wide receivers and notoriously solid against the pass.
  • Sammy Watkins, Buffalo Bills (rib): He was great last week and is facing one of the worst secondaries in football at home. You should love this play, particularly if he's a bargain in daily leagues.
  • DeAndre Hopkins, Houston Texans (illness): He is fine, and that matchup is superb.
  • Cecil Shorts, Jacksonville Jaguars (hamstring): The Jags have been cautious with him, so you should have some confidence using him as needed in a favorable home matchup against the Colts. The Jags should put up some points.

Tight Ends

  • Rob Gronkowski (knee), New England Patriots: We shouldn't be concerned about his potential to play as much as how often he will be used, especially in a likely home blowout of the Oakland Raiders. Gronk is too good to sit, though.
  • Antonio Gates, San Diego Chargers (hamstring): How in the world can anyone sit this guy against the Bills after what he and Philip Rivers did to the Seahawks last week?
  • Greg Olsen, Carolina Panthers (calf): The Steelers haven't been great defending the tight end, sitting seventh worst, per FFToday.com.
  • Zach Ertz, Philadelphia Eagles (knee): He is good to go in any format.
  • Kyle Rudolph, Minnesota Vikings (abdomen): Start him as needed.

Game-Time Decisions

RB Jamaal Charles, Kansas City Chiefs (ankle): We have him on the wrong side of a game-time decision at this point. You probably shouldn't trust him even if he's active. The Chiefs have notoriously been cautious with their No. 1 playmaker, and Knile Davis has proved to be a capable fill-in.

WR Brandon Marshall (ankle) and Alshon Jeffery (hamstring), Chicago Bears: We shouldn't be worried after watching them go from being potentially on the wrong side of a game-time decisions to being active last Sunday night. That New York Jets secondary is exploitable on one leg.

WR Dez Bryant, Dallas Cowboys (shoulder): No way this guy misses this game. You can start him.

RB Arian Foster, Houston Texans (hamstring): You shouldn't be worried about him not playing as much as starting and getting pulled for the remainder of the game early. Still, he is too hot to sit for the Texans and in fantasy.

WR Keenan Allen, San Diego Chargers (groin): The Chargers are playing a rare 1 p.m. ET game at Buffalo, so we will know if he's active. He is fine to start in fantasy if he is.

TE Jordan Cameron, Cleveland Browns (shoulder): He won't be 100 percent even if he plays, and the Baltimore Ravens have been good against tight ends. Sit him out one more week.

TE Vernon Davis, San Francisco 49ers (ankle, knee): He merely jogged lightly at practice Friday, according to Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News. The injury, late-afternoon start time and the Cardinals matchup make him difficult to trust.

WR DeSean Jackson, Washington Redskins (shoulder): His return to Philly might be impacted by his shoulder, but you have to imagine he is going to do everything he can to play and stick it to Chip Kelly and his former team that gave up on him this past winter. There are a lot of reasons to like Jackson as a play, despite the shoulder issue, this week.

WR Eric Decker, New York Jets (hamstring): He didn't practice Thursday or Friday, so you probably have to replace him, despite the favorable matchup. The good news is he has an extra day to rest to Monday night. The bad news is you might not have a last-minute alternative handy to replace him if he's inactive.

RB Shane Vereen, New England Patriots (shoulder): We should expect him to play and find the end zone against the Raiders.

RB Chris Johnson, New York Jets (ankle): We should expect him to be active and starting for fantasy owners against the Bears run defense.

RB Bernard Pierce, Baltimore Ravens (thigh): Expect him to play. Start him as needed, but also keep a watchful eye on Justin Forsett and rookie Lorenzo Taliaferro.

RB Maurice Jones-Drew, Oakland Raiders (hand): Don't touch him at this point.

RB DeAngelo Williams, Carolina Panthers (thigh): He looks on target to play this week, but Jonathan Stewart is going to get too many snaps to trust Williams in fantasy.

WR Hakeem Nicks, Indianapolis Colts (illness): This guy has had a career of not practicing and playing, so don't expect illness to be a reason he disappoints in a favorable matchup at Jacksonville.

Find Replacements

  • TE Jordan Reed, Washington Redskins (hamstring)
  • RB Knowshon Moreno, Miami Dolphins (elbow)
  • RB Ryan Mathews, San Diego Chargers (knee)
  • RB Ben Tate, Cleveland Browns (knee)
  • RB Mark Ingram, New Orleans Saints (hand)
  • QB Carson Palmer, Arizona Cardinals (shoulder)
  • QB Robert Griffin III, Washington Redskins (ankle)
  • WR Marqise Lee, Jacksonville Jaguars (hamstring)

Start 'Em

3 of 6

We have already analyzed the matchups thoroughly in Bleacher Report's Week 3 Predictions, matchups that make Russell Wilson at home a great play, but the public always wants an insider's take on the fringe options who can be starters in fantasy because of a favorable matchup.

Here, we present a start at each position.

QB Kirk Cousins, Washington Redskins (at Philadelphia Eagles)

Cousins showed plenty last week in relief of Robert Griffin III to be ESPN.com's most-added quarterback by a landslide. It certainly helps that a road game against the potent Eagles is on tap.

The Eagles are in the bottom 10 of fantasy against quarterbacks through two weeks, allowing an NFL-high five touchdown passes, per FFToday.com. You have to love the Redskins' weapons and head coach Jay Gruden's pass-friendly system.

RB Ahmad Bradshaw, Indianapolis Colts (at Jacksonville Jaguars)

If Knile Davis is an obvious start after last week, Bradshaw isn't far behind in that regard. The Jags have given up the second-most points in fantasy to running backs through two games, per FFToday.com. Even if Trent Richardson gets starts and the goal-line work, Bradshaw will be heavily featured in the passing game.

WR Mohamed Sanu, Cincinnati Bengals (vs. Tennessee Titans)

It isn't the matchup as much as the likely limitations of A.J. Green (toe) and the continued absence of Marvin Jones (foot). Sanu is a lot better than his mere 10.5 percent ownership in ESPN.com leagues. He is a solid play in any format, particularly as a value pickup in daily fantasy lineups.

TE Niles Paul, Washington Redskins (at Philadelphia Eagles)

The absence of Jordan Reed (hamstring) has made Paul one of the biggest surprises through two weeks of fantasy. Expect this run to continue this week. Cousins showed an affinity for the backup tight end. It is very common for the second quarterbacks to have a solid rapport with the scout-team guys-turned-starters.

D/ST New Orleans Saints (vs. Minnesota Vikings)

Like the Seattle Seahawks playing in front of the 12th Man, the Saints are a night-and-day better team at home. The defense is going to get after the Adrian Peterson-less Vikings and make life difficult on quarterback Matt Cassel, who might be losing his job to rookie Teddy Bridgewater sooner rather than later.

Cassel was good for four interceptions last week against the New England Patriots—and that was at home. Expect a disaster performance at New Orleans.

K Graham Gano, Carolina Panthers

Owned in just 17 percent of ESPN.com's leagues, he doesn't get enough fantasy love. The Panthers are a team built on its defense and running game, two great formulas for a fantasy kicker option.

Throw in the fact that Cam Newton (rib and ankle) isn't yet 100 percent and he is still getting to know his revamped receiving corps, and you have some very good reasons Gano is a top-10 fantasy scorer right now.

Also, the Pittsburgh Steelers are the second-best matchup for a kicker, per FFtoday.com.

Sit 'Em

4 of 6

We are starting to get enough data from the matchups to make lineup decisions in fantasy, but things will get more complex once the byes start next week. Keep considering your healthy stars your starters, but definitely weigh your options on those injury risks we analyzed in the previous slides.

Here are some sits by position for Week 3.

QB Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers (at Arizona Cardinals)

Kaep was supposed to take advantage of suspect secondaries of the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears in the past two games. But his modest numbers have to give you very little confidence in a division matchup at Arizona that should prove to be a low-scoring defensive struggle, particularly with Drew Stanton expected to start for Carson Palmer (shoulder), according to Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News.

The Cardinals did a great job on Philip Rivers and the Chargers at home in Week 1. Kaep is not yet in Rivers' class as a passer.

RB Carlos Hyde, San Francisco 49ers (at Arizona Cardinals)

You have to put Hyde in the same boat as Kaep here. Hyde, coming off a disappointing performance against what should have been a suspect Bears run defense, is even less intriguing of a start this week than the quarterback.

The Cardinals have the NFL's third-ranked run defense and have allowed just 2.6 yards per carry. Only the Detroit Lions have been better. Keep Hyde on the pine, but expect good numbers as the season wears on.

WR Emmanuel Sanders, Denver Broncos (at Seattle Seahawks)

There are multiple reasons to be avoiding Sanders this week, not the least of which is that he's facing the Legion of Boom. Seattle is the toughest place to play and no option for a third or fourth target in a team's passing game. The return of Wes Welker might not produce immediate dividends for fantasy owners, but it will clearly impact Sanders' snaps and targets right away.

TE Niles Paul, Washington Redskins (at Philadelphia Eagles)

Raise your hand if you drafted Paul in fantasy this summer. Now, send your fantasy analyst resume to us at Bleacher Report. We want you. Fantasy owners will want Paul, the No. 5-scoring tight end right now, per FFToday.com, in their fantasy lineups again this week.

He stands to be one of Kirk Cousins' favorite targets (more on that in a later slide).

D/ST Denver Broncos (at Seattle Seahawks)

It can take time for premium free agents to settle in with their new teams. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the busiest team in free agency this past winter, are embarrassingly 0-3 after that Thursday night debacle in Atlanta. The New York Giants were busy signing vets too, and they are similarly bad at 0-2.

The Broncos added T.J. Ward, DeMarcus Ware and Aqib Talib this winter, and all it has gotten them is a dead-last standing in fantasy against quarterbacks, per FFToday.com. The Seahawks are just too tough on opponents at home to trust the shaky start of the bolstered Broncos defense.

K Brandon McManus, Denver Broncos (at Seattle Seahawks)

The Broncos are headed to Seattle (have you heard that one before?) and have a Week 4 bye. Matt Prater is going to be returning from suspension thereafter. There is no longer any reason to own the Broncos' current kicker in fantasy, particularly because he is not 100 percent (groin).

Sleepers and Busts

5 of 6

As we said in a previous slide, the bye weeks put a lot more stress on fantasy lineup decisions than a full week like this one will. It doesn't mean you won't need to break some ties.

We dig into the depths of the options to present to you five quick-hit sleepers and busts (one of each for every position) in determining your lineup or drafting rosters for daily fantasy leagues:

Five Week 3 Lineup Sleepers

  1. QB Ryan Tannehill, Miami Dolphins (vs. Kansas City Chiefs): The Chiefs secondary is one of the most susceptible in football, and Tannehill was pretty good at home in a Week 1 victory over a much better New England Patriots team. Tannehill is a must-start in two-quarterback formats.
  2. RB Khiry Robinson, New Orleans Saints (vs. Minnesota Vikings): His love in fantasy was a bit overrated until Mark Ingram broke his hand last week. The Saints will rotate Pierre Thomas and Robinson often, even at the goal line, making both solid plays in an expected blowout of the Adrian Peterson-less Minnesota Vikings at home.
  3. WR Mohamed Sanu, Cincinnati Bengals (vs. Tennessee Titans): We should be concerned with A.J. Green's (toe) status when it comes to Sanu. The absence of Marvin Jones (foot) is more significant in making Sanu a solid play in all fantasy leagues right now.
  4. TE Niles Paul, Washington Redskins (at Philadelphia Eagles): The stat sheet doesn't lie. The Redskins love going to the tight end. Expect another busy and productive week for Jordan Reed's (hamstring) fill-in starter.
  5. D/ST New Orleans Saints (vs. Minnesota Vikings): The Saints have been awful defensively, but those two subpar performances were on the road. Rob Ryan's defense is going to rebound in a big way back in New Orleans this week.

Five Week 3 Lineup Busts

  1. QB Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos (at Seattle Seahawks): You watched that ugly Super Bowl, right? That was at a neutral site in the other corner of the United States. Manning won't be sat in any leagues, but you cannot expect him to be a difference-maker in your lineups this week either.
  2. RB Matt Forte, Chicago Bears (at New York Jets): Another must-start guy you have to just deal with getting slowed down by an unfavorable matchup. The Jets beat up Eddie Lacy last week and are No. 1 in fantasy against running backs, per FFToday.com.
  3. WR Wes Welker, Denver Broncos (at Seattle Seahawks): He returns earlier than anticipated from his suspension, but it won't necessarily help fantasy owners' lineups. This is a bad matchup, and you have gotten by without Welker for the first two weeks. Keep him reserved.
  4. TE Julius Thomas, Denver Broncos (at Seattle Seahawks): You cannot sit this beast, but you can bet the Seahawks are going to do everything they can to take the Broncos' arguable No. 1 weapon away, like they did in the Super Bowl in February.
  5. D/ST Seattle Seahawks (vs. Denver Broncos): You never sit this defensive unit at home...against anyone. Did you consider sitting it in postseason leagues in the Super Bowl? That would have been a mistake. We might see the Broncos play better here to exact some measure of revenge, but you have to keep the Seahawks active.

Last-Minute Waiver Options

6 of 6

We have already beaten the waiver wire to death in Bleacher Report's Week 3 Insider Notebook, Week 3 Big Board and Week 3 Predictions. The options keep presenting themselves late leading up to Sunday kickoffs every week, though.

Here are some emerging last-minute lineup and daily options from CBSSports.com's most-viewed players.

  • RB Alfred Blue, Houston Texans: The rookie running back out of LSU might pick up some touches behind Arian Foster (hamstring). Foster's awful injury history might make Blue one of the more important handcuff running backs in fantasy, Knile Davis style.
  • RB Jonathan Stewart, Carolina Panthers: DeAngelo Williams (thigh) is expected to be on the right side of a game-time decision, as ESPN.com's David Newton reports, but teams have some success pounding the ball at the Pittsburgh Steelers defense. It sits in the bottom 10 of fantasy against running backs, per FFToday.com. That is where Stewart comes in.
  • RB Khiry Robinson, New Orleans Saints: The absence of Mark Ingram (broken hand) will make Robinson a bigger piece of the rotation with Pierre Thomas. Both Saints backs are solid sleepers, particularly in an anticipated blowout victory at home. There should be a lot of garbage time for Robinson.
  • RB Donald Brown, San Diego Chargers: He assumes the feature-back role with Ryan Mathews (knee) out at least a month, according to Michael Gehlken of The San Diego Union-Tribune. He is going to be a factor through the early bye season.
  • RB Matt Asiata, Minnesota Vikings: Adrian Peterson's indefinite suspension puts the ball in Asiata's hands...at least until physical freak of a rookie Jerick McKinnon is ready to take off. Asiata finds the end zone in New Orleans like he did in Week 2.
  • TE Niles Paul, Washington Redskins: Jordan Reed (hamstring) is out, according to Tarik El-Bashir of CSN Washington, so expect Paul to continue to be a gem of a fantasy sleeper in all leagues, especially in that potential shootout in Philly.
  • WR Mohamed Sanu, Cincinnati Bengals: A.J. Green (toe) might be active, but he won't be 100 percent. Sanu will be an important target for Andy Dalton.
