15 Potential Game-Changing NBA Trades

Ethan NorofJun 5, 2018

Blockbuster trades in the NBA can really shake up the landscape of the league, but they're incredibly difficult to facilitate between two or more teams.

There are a litany of players who could be wearing different uniforms by the time the March 15 trade deadline rolls around, and we're really going to see conversation heat up over the next few weeks.

Not all of the guys here are surefire candidates to be moved, but each could flourish in new ways if moved to a different destination.

These 15 game-changing trades certainly gets one thinking about some interesting possibilities.

Steve Nash

1 of 15

Phoenix Receives: PG Darren Collison, PF Tyler Hansbrough

Indiana Receives: PG Steve Nash

For PHX: The team will have to commit to undergoing a rebuilding project, but a haul like this one would be an impressive return for the Suns.

Nash is set to hit unrestricted free agency next season, and Phoenix's long-term outlook will change significantly if the team can gain future assets rather than let the two-time MVP walk out the door for nothing.

For IND: If the Pacers want to get serious about making a postseason push this season, this is a good way to do it.

A pick-and-pop game worked well with Chris Paul and David West in New Orleans, and Nash could really push a talented Pacers team up another notch.

Kirk Hinrich

2 of 15

Atlanta Receives: G/F Thabo Sefolosha, C Cole Aldrich

Oklahoma City Receives: PG Kirk Hinrich

For OKC: Oklahoma City can get a veteran point guard for the stretch run this season and watch his lucrative contract expire at season's end.

No knock against Reggie Jackson, but Hinrich would an asset off the bench, and Daequan Cook has looked comfortable starting in place of Sefolosha.

For ATL: Larry Drew loves defense, and Sefolosha would bring that to a gritty second unit.

Atlanta could also nab some much-needed size in Aldrich, who could most likely be had in the right deal.

D.J. Augustin

3 of 15

Charlotte Receives: PG Steve Blake, SF Devin Ebanks, future first-round pick

Los Angeles Lakers Receive: PG D.J. Augustin

For CHA: Charlotte has always expressed hesitancy toward the thought of extending Augustin long-term, and he'll be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

The Bobcats could net another pick in a loaded 2012 draft while also bringing a veteran stabilizer in Blake to the second unit.

For LAL: The Lakers should be exploring every potential opportunity for an upgrade at the point position, and Augustin is a guy who fits multiple needs.

He'd be a major upgrade as a starter and is someone is capable of helping to shoulder the scoring load.

Augustin shoots decently (34.2 percent) from beyond the arc and could help to stretch the floor.

Chris Kaman

4 of 15

New Orleans Receives: PG Beno Udrih, F/C Larry Sanders, F/C Jon Brockman

Milwaukee Receives: C Chris Kaman

For MIL: Isn't it obvious? The Bucks need some size down low in the wake of Andrew Bogut's ankle injury.

Drew Gooden has been playing very well, but a frontline of Kaman and Gooden could really provide some help to Brandon Jennings for the postseason push.

For NO: David Stern and Co. get exactly what they want in young assets for the Hornets in this particular deal.

Udrih is barely playing in Milwaukee, while both Sanders and Brockman have seen inconsistent roles under Scott Skiles all season.

Andray Blatche

5 of 15

Washington Receives: F Tyrus Thomas, F Eduardo Najera

Charlotte Receives: F/C Andray Blatche, SF Chris Singleton

For CHA: The Bobcats have to make adjustments, as it's clear that the current mix of players on the roster is just not getting it done.

Although Blatche comes with obvious risk, he is someone Charlotte could feature heavily down low and would be very available from Washington.

For WAS: Thomas would be an excellent addition for a youthful Wizards team, and a defensive pairing of Thomas and JaVale McGee would be unbelievably athletic.

GM Ernie Grunfeld's tenure has been met with serious scrutiny, but if he could manage to pull something like this off, it would be well worth investigating.

O.J. Mayo

6 of 15

Memphis Receives: PG Jonny Flynn, F/C Jordan Hill, future second-round pick

Houston Receives: O.J. Mayo

For MEM: The Grizzlies get a backup for Mike Conley who comes with some experience, while Hill is a better back-up center to Marc Gasol than the Grizzlies currently have on the roster.

The future second-round pick could be used in another subsequent deal with another club.

For HOU: The Rockets improve the second unit drastically, and Mayo is someone the team could look to re-sign after the season.

The move would also allow the team to explore dealing Kevin Martin, who has been in and out of Kevin McHale's doghouse of late.

Carlos Boozer

7 of 15

Chicago Receives: C Dwight Howard, SF Hedo Turkoglu

Orlando Receives: PF Carlos Boozer, SF Luol Deng, G/F Kyle Korver

For CHI: If you get a chance to pair Derrick Rose and Dwight Howard, you do it.

Taking on Turkoglu's contract is tough, but a chance to shed of Boozer's inflated deal and a chance at a championship every season is well worth it.

For ORL: If "multiple established veterans" is truly the criteria, this is a deal that could truly fit the definition.

Deng and Boozer is a nice core to build around going forward, but it's hard to know exactly what the long-term picture is in Orlando.

Stephen Jackson

8 of 15

Milwaukee Receives: C Darko Milicic, G/F Wesley Johnson, future second-round pick

Minnesota Receives: G/F Stephen Jackson

For MIL: The Stephen Jackson experiment clearly isn't working out for the Bucks, and the team definitely has needs to fill out on the roster.

Adding size in Milicic and someone who plays solid defense in Johnson are both elements that Scott Skiles would welcome to his team.

For MIN: Jackson would start at shooting guard for the T-Wolves, and if he's getting his minutes, S-Jax is still a very useful player.

The T-Wolves need more offense from that spot on the floor, and Jackson might bring a very intriguing skill set to an already exciting team.

Jose Calderon

9 of 15

Toronto Receives: PG Devin Harris, future first-round pick

Utah Receives: PG Jose Calderon

For UTA: Imagine talented bigs like Pau Millsap and Al Jefferson being able to work with a point guard who is actually a pass-first player.

Calderon has real skill and ability, and if Utah doesn't get what it had hoped for with Calderon, the team could turn around and explore dealing him next season.

For TOR: Harris needs a change of scenery, and he could really have an opportunity to flourish playing his kind of game in Toronto.

He'd be asked to play serious defense under Dwane Casey, but he illustrated in New Jersey that he's a capable scorer when asked to perform in that role.

Michael Beasley

10 of 15

Minnesota Receives: SG J.J. Redick, F/C Daniel Orton, future second-round pick

Orlando Receives: SF Michael Beasley, F/C Anthony Randolph

For MIN: Redick would be a really solid fit at a reasonable price for the T-Wolves to fill an obvious need at shooting guard.

Orton has done absolutely nothing in his NBA career, but Minnesota would not be committed to him beyond the length of the current season.

For ORL: Beasley would significantly bolster the attack from the second unit, where his scoring ability would be embraced.

Randolph could play a versatile role for Orlando and could even allow the team to take Glen Davis out of a back-up center role.

Ramon Sessions

11 of 15

Cleveland Receives: PG Eric Bledsoe, SG Randy Foye

Los Angeles Clippers Receive: G Ramon Sessions

For CLE: The Cavs get some insurance in case Anthony Parker's back injury is an issue all season in adding veteran Randy Foye.

Cleveland also adds a very promising young point guard in Eric Bledsoe, who could draw significant interest in a side deal with another team.

For LAC: If the team is unable to sign J.R. Smith, Sessions would be a very strong player to have as the starting two or first guard off the bench.

Sessions has shown an ability to have success at either guard position, and the move would create some long-term financial flexibility for Los Angeles.

Rajon Rondo

12 of 15

Boston Receives: G Jamal Crawford, G/F Nicolas Batum, SF Luke Babbitt, future first-round pick

Portland Receives: PG Rajon Rondo, PG Keyon Dooling, future second-round pick

For BOS: Rajon Rondo's name keeps popping up in trade rumors, and the listed return here is a really interesting batch of players.

General manager Danny Ainge loves scorers, which both of Crawford and Batum are, and the Celtics would be able to match any offers on Batum during the offseason, when he's a restricted free agent.

For POR: LaMarcus Aldridge with Rajon Rondo? That's something that would be must-see TV.

Raymond Felton would play behind Rondo as the sixth man, and Portland gets an incredibly cost-efficient answer at the point guard position for the long term.

Pau Gasol

13 of 15

Los Angeles Lakers Receive: PG Rajon Rondo, C Jermaine O'Neal

Boston Celtics Receive: F/C Pau Gasol

For LAL: The Lakers must upgrade at point guard, and this is a deal that is truly beneficial for both parties.

Rondo is exactly the type of player Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum need to space the floor, and the Lakers would be awfully dangerous with him in the fold.

For BOS: The Celtics get a major upgrade in the middle and lay claim to a new frontline of Gasol, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.

Not so coincidentally, the move would keep Pierce's championship window open beyond this season, as both his and Gasol's deals are set to expire simultaneously.

Andre Miller

14 of 15

Denver Receives: G/F Francisco Garcia, F/C Jason Thompson, future first-round pick

Sacramento Receives: PG Andre Miller, SF Jordan Hamilton

For DEN: If, and only if, the Nuggets decide to explore the market for Miller, this is a move that could make this team even deeper.

Garcia would add depth on the wing, while Thompson is an exciting young player who could help in an energy role off the bench.

For SAC: Miller would allow Keith Smart to experiment with his rotation, and the Kings would get a good leader in the fold for a very young team.

This would be an absolute no-brainer move for Sacramento despite having to sacrifice the future selection.

Dwight Howard

15 of 15

Orlando Receives: SG Kevin Martin, PF Luis Scola, PG Steve Blake, future first-round pick from LAL, future first-round pick from HOU

Houston Receives: F/C Pau Gasol

Los Angeles Lakers Receive: PG Jameer Nelson, C Dwight Howard

For HOU: The Rockets finally get their long-coveted target in Gasol.

For ORL: Orlando adds two very solid players in Scola and Martin while also loading up in the first round of a very promising class.

For LAL: Los Angeles would have some real twin towers in Bynum and Howard, and it would be hard to imagine many points getting scored on that pairing at the rim.
