Fantasy Football Week 6: The Ultimate Guide to Sunday's Action

Eric MackOct 11, 2014

Sometimes there is only one thing that can ignite you out of the early-season doldrums: fantasy fireworks.

We look to the potentially big numbers in the NFL East rivalry game Sunday night in Philadelphia against the New York Giants and the Eagles, as Bleacher Report presents The Ultimate Guide to Sunday's Action.

Also, don't miss out on the silly totals expected in the Chicago Bears' visit at the Atlanta Falcons, a matchup that pits two elite offenses against two suspect defenses. That is a perfect storm for fantasy owners, and we aren't referring to Jacksonville Jaguars running back Storm Johnson—although we do that before the end of this comprehensive slideshow.

This guide gives the final Top 100 rankings, a review of the injuries, starts, sits, sleepers, busts and last-minute waiver options leading up to the 1 p.m. kickoffs every week.

Overall Rankings

1 of 7

We have waited almost a month and a half for the preseason's top rookie running back to prove to be a must-start fantasy option. The wait might be over.

The Tennessee Titans' Bishop Sankey is not only facing the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday—fantasy's second-worst team against running backs, according to FFToday.com—but he likely won't have to contend with veteran plodder Shonn Greene usurping the feature role and sucking up his snaps, touches and scoring opportunities. Greene (hamstring) is doubtful to play Sunday, according to Joe Fann of the Titans' official website.

Usually injuries are of the untimely nature. Not this one as it pertains to the Titans, Sankey and his anxious fantasy owners:

"

I'm looking forward to as many carries as they want me to have. Depending on Shonn’s situation, me, Leon (Washington) and Dexter (McCluster) are going to have to have to pick up some of the slack. I think we're capable of doing that, and I think everyone is excited to get this win. That's the main thing we're focused on.

"

We rank Sankey an optimistic 34th in Bleacher Report's Top 100 for fantasy Week 6. He was going to be high regardless of Greene's status, but the matchup clinched it.

The only running back with a better matchup this week is the Chicago Bears' Matt Forte. The Bears are facing an Atlanta Falcons defense that has allowed a league-high (by a wide margin) nine rushing touchdowns to backs. Forte is our No. 1 player.

Not only will the Titans lean on the rookie Sankey to the bulk of the rushing, they will also rely on first-year left tackle Taylor Lewan to clear the way. Lewan will be the starter now with Michael Roos (knee) going down for the season.

Lewan was born to be a starting tackle in the NFL and Sankey has the makings of a fantasy gem, especially against this Jaguars. Sankey's likely first career start comes at a perfect time, even if it was more than a month overdue.

Injury Report

2 of 7

Injuries have made for some nice waiver-wire sleepers this week, but they have also made for some holes in fantasy lineups. We break down the official NFL injury report's (credentials required) most prominent names here.

Note: All practice participation information is courtesy of that weekly report.

Game-Time Decisions

WR Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions

Johnson is doubtful and likely to miss his first game of the season, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reported. A pair of unproductive performances amid Megatron's ankle woes the past two weeks should have prepared you to sit him in all leagues anyway. Consider Golden Tate a must-start option in Megatron's place.

WR A.J. Green, Cincinnati Bengals

Green is unlikely to play after wearing a protective boot to Friday's practice, as Paul Dehner Jr. of the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. Like Megatron, the Bengals figure to play it very conservatively with their elite wideout. Keep him reserved in all leagues. You should like Mohamed Sanu as a starting option.

TE Greg Olsen, Carolina Panthers

He returned to practice Friday, so we should expect him to play and be fine to start in fantasy as someone on the right side of a game-time decision.

WR Vincent Jackson/Mike Evans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Bucs' twin towers are listed questionable after practicing on a limited basis this week. Jackson should remain active, while Roy Cummings of The Tampa Tribune expects Evans to return from his one-week absence. Use either as needed in fantasy lineups.

TE Vernon Davis, San Francisco 49ers

The veteran will get an extra day to rest before Monday night, but back issues are notoriously tricky for veteran tight ends. Start someone else in his place before Sunday's lineup deadline.

QB Tom Brady, New England Patriots

Ankle, schmankle. He is playing, as he always does despite a "questionable" status on the injury report.

RB Reggie Bush, Detroit Lions

Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official website does not expect Bush to play. That makes Joique Bell an intriguing play coming off his concussion absence from Week 5.

RB Fred Jackson, Buffalo Bills

It would take more than illness and an ankle issue for Jackson to miss this matchup against the New England Patriots, as Joe Buscaglia of WGR 550 AM in Buffalo tweeted. That doesn't make Jackson a great fantasy play, though. Use Jackson as your own risk.

WR Eric Decker, New York Jets

We have seen other players burn their former teams this season, namely Steve Smith and DeSean Jackson. Decker is not 100 percent, though, and Geno Smith is still the Jets quarterback. Decker might play, as Rex Ryan told ESPN.com's Rich Cimini, but Decker is one awkward tweak from complete fantasy frustration.

TE Jordan Reed, Washington Redskins

You have waited this long for his return, you might as well wait one more week for him to show he's healthy and productive before you really begin to trust him in fantasy lineups.

QB Carson Palmer, Arizona Cardinals

Here is a classic quote from head coach Bruce Arians to Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official website: "Honest to God, for the first time in 20 years, I really don't know who’s starting." Arians told Urban his quarterback is throwing at only 80 percent right now. You cannot start a limited Palmer, even if the Cardinals do.

The Rest

The following lesser-owned fantasy options are game-time decisions that we will have to be tracking up until kickoff Sunday, but you should find a healthier and more productive option for them right now:

  1. WR Malcom Floyd, San Diego Chargers (calf)
  2. RB Shonn Greene, Tennessee Titans (hamstring)
  3. WR Marvin Jones, Cincinnati Bengals (ankle)
  4. RB Jonathan Stewart, Carolina Panthers (knee)
  5. WR Devin Hester, Atlanta Falcons (hamstring)

The Probables

The following, ranked by their fantasy ownership, are listed as probable to play, so you can use them as necessary:

  1. WR Keenan Allen, San Diego Chargers
  2. WR Dez Bryant, Dallas Cowboys
  3. WR Percy Harvin, Seattle Seahawks
  4. WR Julio Jones, Atlanta Falcons
  5. TE Delanie Walker, Tennessee Titans
  6. WR Mike Wallace, Miami Dolphins
  7. RB Andre Ellington, Arizona Cardinals
  8. RB Zac Stacy, St. Louis Rams
  9. QB Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys
  10. RB Ben Tate, Cleveland Browns
  11. RB Lamar Miller, Miami Dolphins
  12. TE Jordan Cameron, Cleveland Browns
  13. RB Joique Bell, Detroit Lions
  14. RB Knowshon Moreno, Miami Dolphins
  15. WR Cordarrelle Patterson, Minnesota Vikings
  16. TE Heath Miller, Pittsburgh Steelers
  17. RB Matt Asiata, Minnesota Vikings
  18. RB Chris Johnson, New York Jets

Find Replacements

The following players, listed in order of fantasy prominence/ownership, are all listed as officially out for Week 6, so get them out of your lineups immediately and perhaps consider their replacements:

  1. RB Rashad Jennings, New York Giants (knee)
  2. RB Montee Ball, Denver Broncos (groin)
  3. RB Ryan Mathews, San Diego Chargers (knee)
  4. RB Toby Gerhart, Jacksonville Jaguars (foot)
  5. RB DeAngelo Williams, Carolina Panthers (ankle)
  6. RB Donald Brown, San Diego Chargers (concussion)
  7. TE Kyle Rudolph, Minnesota Vikings (hernia)
  8. QB Robert Griffin III, Washington Redskins (ankle)
  9. WR Harry Douglas, Atlanta Falcons (foot)
  10. WR Jarrett Boykin, Green Bay Packers (groin)

Start 'Em

3 of 7

For those of you in a fantasy hole because of your struggling stars, you might be desperate to make a gutsy call with a fringe fantasy option to bail you out. That is generally a bad way to alter your fate.

It won't stop us from trying to help, though.

We outline some of B/R's underrated starts for Week 6 based on favorable matchups, circumstances due to projected touches or opportunities created by injury.

QB Eli Manning, New York Giants

No one drafted this Manning to be a regular starter in standard leagues—no one in their right fantasy mind anyway. He has been red hot, though, now that he has grasped offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo's system. Rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was added to a solid receiving corps that already featured Victor Cruz, has cultivated breakout tight end Larry Donnell and started making Rueben Randle a significant factor in recent weeks.

Manning has thrown for at least two touchdowns each of the past four games and now will have more on his shoulders with the loss of Rashad Jennings (knee) for a period. Andre Williams is a capable sub, but Manning is facing the worst team in fantasy against quarterbacks (per FFToday.com) in the Philadelphia Eagles.

That expected shootout in Philly should make Manning more than a mere nice replacement starter. It can make him a fantasy MVP on Sunday night, despite the fact he was active in a mere 47 percent of CBSSports.com leagues Saturday morning.

RB Bishop Sankey, Tennessee Titans

We have already trumpeted Sankey's breakout party in the Overall Rankings slide, not to mention B/R's Week 6 Predictions. We feel compelled to give you one more reminder here.

Sankey, a threat in the running and passing games for the Titans, faces a great matchup against those Jacksonville Jaguars and an ideal situation with Shonn Greene (hamstring) listed as doubtful, as Joe Fann of the Titans' official website tweeted. Expect Sankey to emerge as a focal point of the Titans offense, particularly if they manage to blow out the Jags at home here.

Sankey, surprisingly, has seen his ownership drop 1.8 percent in ESPN.com leagues this week. He is starting in a mere 38 percent of CBSSports.com leagues. There is still time to get in on the ground floor here with a potential fantasy game changer.

WR Mohamed Sanu, Cincinnati Bengals

Sometimes we have to question what games are fantasy owners watching. Sanu has performed like a must-have wideout for most of the early going this season. It has taken this long to get his ownership in ESPN.com leagues up to a mere 26.7 percent.

With A.J. Green (toe) expected to be limited, if he even plays, as ESPN.com's Cole Harvey wrote, Sanu becomes Andy Dalton's go-to receiver. Sanu has already equaled Green's reception total through four games this season. He is going to surpass him in Week 6, at a fraction of the fantasy cost.

The matchup against the Carolina Panthers might not resonate as a favorable one, necessarily, but those Panthers have allowed the second-most touchdown receptions to wideouts to date, according to FFToday.com.

TE Owen Daniels, Baltimore Ravens

The loss of Dennis Pitta (hip) for the season was supposed to make Daniels a must-have fantasy tight end again. Fantasy owners have been slow to turn to the veteran, despite the fact he is the starter for a tight end-friendly offense and quarterback in the Ravens' Joe Flacco.

Daniels was the most-added tight end in ESPN.com leagues this week, but it has pushed his ownership up to a mere 27.3 percent. That is a real low number for someone of Daniels' body of work, especially coming off five catches for 70 yards against the Colts last week. This might be your last chance to pick up this top-10 option.

Daniels is facing a Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense that has been ripped through the air. They are the NFL's third-worst pass defense. They have also given up the most receptions to tight ends (tied at 39) and the second-most yards, per FFToday.com.

D/ST Baltimore Ravens

Speaking of those Ravens, how about their defense as a play this week?

Owned in just 24.4 percent of ESPN.com leagues, fantasy is missing an opportunity here, too, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs are the third-worst team in fantasy against opposing D/STs (FFToday.com).

Ignore the fact the Ravens D/ST is just 27th in standard scoring, according to FFToday.com. This is a top-10 team against the run. Baltimore can take away what the Bucs want to do, expose young, one-dimensional quarterback Mike Glennon and force him into turnovers. The Ravens are a solid play off waivers here.

Sit 'Em

4 of 7

Fantasy is most definitely not reality. Perceptions and buzz can alter fantasy's reality on a weekly basis.

Here are some of B/R's projected bad plays this week, despite those hoping for good news out of these fringe fantasy options:

QB Kirk Cousins, Washington Redskins

Save for a bad performance in that Thursday night home blowout loss to the New York Giants, Cousins has looked capable of putting away Robert Griffin III as the unquestioned starter for Jay Gruden's Redskins. Then you look at how the Arizona Cardinals have allowed the second-most passing yards and fourth-most points to fantasy quarterbacks (FFToday.com).

Don't get sucked into those numbers. They were altered by Peyton Manning's huge Week 5 performance in Denver. Cousins is a bad play at Arizona.

The Cardinals shut down superior quarterbacks Philip Rivers and Colin Kaepernick in their past two home games. They are going to take struggling Alfred Morris out of the equation with their elite run defense and pin their ears back against Cousins and the Redskins' passing game.

RB Ronnie Hillman, Denver Broncos

Congratulations on scoring Hillman off waivers as the No. 2 most-added player in CBSSports.com leagues. Now sit him.

You made a mistake if you chose Hillman over the likes of the San Diego Chargers' Branden Oliver or the New York Giants' Andre Williams. Heck, even the Jacksonville Jaguars' Storm Johnson is a better play than Hillman this week.

Sure, Hillman is going to get the bulk of the workload, as ESPN.com's Jeff Legwald reported, but he won't be alone in replacing Montee Ball (groin). C.J. Anderson figures to do the power, short-yardage running, while Juwan Thompson can steal snaps as a change-of-pace back.

Also, most important, the New York Jets are still an elite team against fantasy running backs (FFToday.com) and against the run in general.

WR Sammy Watkins, Buffalo Bills

Veteran quarterback Kyle Orton injected some life into Watkins' fantasy value last week. Against the New England Patriots, expect cornerback Darrelle Revis to suck the life right back out of him.

ESPN.com's Mike Rodak reported Watkins is expected to do a lot of shadowing the talented rookie receiver Sunday. Expect Watkins to learn about the lonely existence on Revis Island:

"

We actually found he's gonna be following me around the field, so I'm gonna have to be prepared for his jams. He’s very smart. I have to be very competitive and smart off the ball. ... I'm put to the test early. That's what I look forward to. Going out there and competing with him. I know there's gonna be some good and bad, but actually, it will just help our offense out with just keeping me in tune. I can't rest one play. I'll be engaged each play.

"

Watkins is going to put up huge numbers in the NFL, perhaps most of the weeks of this season, regardless of whom the Bills trot out as quarterback. This is not one of those weeks.

TE Vernon Davis, San Francisco 49ers

Another day of rest Sunday before Monday Night Football figures to work in Davis' favor to play. CSNBayArea.com's Matt Maiocco tweeted Davis (back) "is on target to play."

He is not on target to star for fantasy owners regardless, though. The Rams have allowed the second-fewest receptions, third-fewest yards and just one touchdown to tight ends through four games, per FFToday.com.

You are better off allowing Davis to prove healthy and productive before you trust him in fantasy lineups at this point.

D/ST Carolina Panthers

What a difference a year makes. This unit cannot get out of its own way this season—or stay in the way off opposing offenses for that matter.

The Panthers are the most-dropped defensive unit in CBSSports.com leagues this week, and for good reason(s).

The Cincinnati Bengals might not be a truly threatening offense, but they don't make many mistakes either. The Bengals are a top-10 team in fantasy against D/STs, so at least sit the Panthers if you are not ready to cut them outright.

Sleepers and Busts

5 of 7

You might have gotten into a groove with setting your fantasy lineups by now, but those daily fantasy leagues are not so easy to win on a regular basis without some deeper inspection. We break down the five lineup sleepers to consider and five busts to avoid in those leagues for Week 6.

Five Week 5 Lineup Sleepers

  1. QB Ryan Tannehill, Miami Dolphins—We could see him having to get into a shootout with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. The Dolphins have a very good running game now (the NFL's fifth-best), so facing the Packers' dead-last run defense could open up scoring opportunities for Tannehill, especially in the play-action game.
  2. RB Joique Bell, Detroit Lions—He should be the feature back with Reggie Bush (ankle) unlikely to play, as we outlined in the Injury Report slide.
  3. WR Odell Beckham Jr., New York Giants—That was an impressive debut in Week 5, and this should be a shootout against the fourth-worst secondary in football that suits Beckham nicely.
  4. TE Owen Daniels, Baltimore Ravens—We already featured him in the Start 'Em slide, but he is so intriguing and underrated, we decided to mention him all over again here.
  5. D/ST Tennessee Titans—This defense is only worth owning in one week of the year in most leagues: when playing at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the worst team in fantasy against D/STs (FFToday.com).

Five Week 5 Lineup Busts

  1. QB Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys—Starting any quarterback at Seattle is a questionable move. Romo just isn't elite enough to warrant keeping active here.
  2. RB Doug Martin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers—This would be a bad week to hope for a Martin revival. He has been real disappointing and the Ravens are top 10 against fantasy backs, per FFToday.com, and in run defense.
  3. WR DeSean Jackson, Washington Redskins—As we noted in the Sit 'Em slide, the Arizona Cardinals secondary is better than the numbers look after getting a beating by Peyton Manning in Denver last week.
  4. TE Vernon Davis, San Francisco 49ers—We warned you in the Injury Report and Sit 'Em slides. If that wasn't enough, we have no help for you. The 49ers are going to be cautious with a 30-year-old tight end's back.
  5. D/ST Cincinnati Bengals—They were ripped by the New England Patriots last Sunday night, so you cannot feel confident in them as a regular starting option, especially against an elite quarterback like Cam Newton...no matter who his receivers are.

Last-Minute Waiver Options

6 of 7

We have presented Week 6's top alternatives on the waiver wire thoroughly in B/R's Insider Notebook, Big Board and Week 6 Predictions. You still might not be satisfied, though.

If you're still hunting for some replacement options, we review the prospects of some of CBSSports.com's most-viewed players leading up to Sunday's kickoffs:

  1. RB Storm Johnson, Jacksonville Jaguars—The absence of Toby Gerhart (ankle) gives a huge opportunity here to Johnson and, for that matter, Denard Robinson.
  2. RB Antone Smith, Atlanta Falcons—He has stolen the thunder from rookie Devonta Freeman for the time being as Steven Jackson's backup. The Chicago Bears figure to struggle against the run, too.
  3. TE Jordan Reed, Washington Redskins—You might want to take a flier on him even if you don't dare start him just yet. There can eventually be starter-quality numbers from him.
  4. TE Tim Wright, New England Patriots—The Pats tight ends have ripped the Buffalo Bills in the past, but we just cannot be sure Wright is going to be a consistent target week to week.
  5. RB Benny Cunningham, St. Louis Rams—The 49ers are not a defense to try to exploit on the ground, but Cunningham is steadily taking snaps from the disappointing Zac Stacy.
  6. RB Ronnie Hillman, Denver Broncos—He is the lead back in a potent offense, but the time-share and matchup don't work in his favor this week.
  7. RB C.J. Anderson, Denver Broncos—He is a far better bet to reach the end zone against the New York Jets this week than Hillman. Anderson is a real sleeper right now.
  8. WR Odell Beckham Jr., New York Giants—We could be talking about Beckham alongside Kelvin Benjamin as must-have rookie receivers after Sunday night in Philly.
  9. QB Austin Davis, St. Louis Rams—He is coming off a huge performance, but we really don't like him to keep it up against the San Francisco 49ers defense on Monday night.
  10. WR Mohamed Sanu, Cincinnati Bengals—He needs to stop flying under the fantasy radar. He is a legit third-year wide receiver breakout, especially with the banged-up Bengals receivers around him.
