NBA Trade Talk: One Trade Every NBA Team Needs to Make

Jun 7, 2018

When and if the NBA resumes this season, there will no doubt be a flurry of free-agent signings and trades to make up for time lost this summer.

Since no trades can currently take place, every NBA fan knows the next best thing is a good trade rumor.ย  While it's possible none of these will take place, they all make sense financially and should benefit all parties involved.

Here is one trade that every NBA team should make when the lockout ends.

Spurs, Knicks, Cavaliers: Tony Parker Goes to NY

1 of 14

Knicks Receive: Tony Parker, Antonio McDyess

Spurs Receive: Chauncey Billups, Ramon Sessions

Cavaliers Receive: Landry Fields, Future first-rounder from Knicks

Why it Works:ย  The Knicks get their point guard of the future who's signed for the next four years and comes cheaper than signing someone like Chris Paul.ย  They also get a tough, veteran big man in McDyess which they desperately need.

The Spurs move on from Parker while still staying competitive with Billups.ย  They get the salary relief from Parker's contract and a young talented point guard in Sessions who could move into the starting lineup next season.ย

Trading McDyess opens up more minutes for young big men Tiago Splitter and DeJaun Blair, both of whom had PER's of over 16 last season.

The Cavaliers get a good young shooting guard/small forward in Fields who fits into their roster better and could immediately start at the 2-guard.ย  It also creates more minutes for Kyrie Irving as Cleveland works to remove their log jam at point guard.ย  Also provides some salary relief.

Wizards, Pistons: The Bad Contract Swap

2 of 14

Wizards Receive: Ben Gordon, Charlie Villanueva

Pistons Receive: Rashard Lewis

Why it Works:ย  While certainly not a pretty trade, both teams could benefit by moving these contracts around.

Rashard Lewis is so overpaid, it takes two bad contracts to balance his out.ย  The advantage for the Pistons is they only have to put up with two more years of bad deals instead of three with Villanueva and Gordon.ย

Joe Dumars, apparently after a night out on the town, overpaid severely for both and has seen little production for his dollars.ย  At least with Lewis at forward and Gordon gone, more minutes open up in the backcourt for rookie Brandon Knight.

The Wizards get rid of the two worst contracts in basketball back to back years while getting some players that, while overpaid, still hold more value than Lewis.ย

Villanueva is still only 26 and put up good numbers three years ago in Milwaukee. Gordon is a nice veteran influence in a young backcourt and is a nice insurance policy if they choose not to match a Nick Young contract offer.ย

The Wizards payroll is low enough they can afford to take a gamble like this.

Hawks, Clippers: The Williams Trade, Mo for Marvin

3 of 14

Hawks Receive: Mo Williams

Clippers Receive: Marvin Williams

Why it Works: The Clipps and Hawks swap players with almost identical PER's and contracts that fit both of their team needs better.

Atlanta get's Mo's offense at point guard which could be huge if they lose Jamal Crawford in free agency.ย  Marvin was moved to the bench towards the end of the last year and saw his minutes dramatically decrease.ย

He should find himself once again in a starting position with the Clippers who would then move Eric Bledsoe to the full time starting point guard.

Not a big move but one that would help both teams.

Lakers, Bobcats, Nuggets: Bynum Goes to Denver

4 of 14

Nuggets Receive: Andrew Bynum, Tyrus Thomas

Lakers Receive: D.J. Augustine, Wilson Chandler

Bobcats Receive: Al Harrington, J.R. Smith (sign and trade) first-round pick from Nuggets

Why it Works:ย  The Nuggets replace Nene and Kenyon Martin with a younger, more athletic frontcourt.ย  They also get rid of Al Harrington's contract and realize with multiple players needing extensions soon, Chandler was expendable and could be traded.

Lakers upgrade their two weakest positions while moving Gasol to center and Lamar Odom back to starting lineup at power forward.ย  Augustine represents huge upgrade over Fisher and Chandler gives them an athletic scoring option.

Bobcats move Augustine and give Kemba Walker full reigns of team, providing him with another scoring option in Smith who actually listens and respects Paul Silas.ย  Charlotte sheds some salary by swapping Thomas for Harrington and gains an additional first-rounder from Nuggets in 2012 draft full of stars.

Celtics, Grizzlies: Mayo Goes to Boston

5 of 14

Celtics Receive: O.J. Mayo

Grizzlies Receive: Glen Davis, Avery Bradley

Why it Works:ย  Boston needs to get younger while still trying to keep their championship window open.ย  The Celtics get a great young scorer who can learn from one of the best in Ray Allen and together with Jeff Green can slowly take over for the aging Celts.ย

JaJuan Johnson now takes Davis's spot as the primary backup big.

The Grizzlies obviously aren't including Mayo in future plans after trying to deal him before the trade deadline last season, so with it they get a productive bench big in Davis and a young scorer off the bench in Bradley.ย

Boston could also include a second-round pick.

Pacers, Warriors: Granger Joins Steph Curry in Golden State

6 of 14

Pacers Receive: Monta Ellis, Jeremy Tyler

Warriors Receive: Danny Granger

Why it Works: Ellis appeared to be on the move the minute Golden State began working out Klay Thompson.ย  Let's face it, they didn't spend a lottery pick on him so that he could sit the bench for the next couple years.ย

The Warriors get a great player in Granger who starts at small forward with Thompson moving into the starting five.ย

Indiana balances out their team by moving Paul George into starting lineup at his natural small forward spot with Ellis and Darren Collison in the backcourt.ย

They also add PF/C Jeremy Tyler who could turn out to be the sleeper of the draft and was at one time on of the top high school players in the nation.

Suns, Nets: New Jersey Clears Cap Space

7 of 14

Suns Receive: Travis Outlaw, Anthony Morrow

Nets Receive: Josh Childress, Mickael Pietrus

Why it Works:ย  Again, not the prettiest trade here, but there are benefits if you look deep enough.

Both teams move a bad contract for another one in hopes that a change of scenery will kick-start both Childress and Outlaw.ย

New Jersey, in an effort to bring in more stars to play with Deron Williams, clear cap space by sending Morrow and his two year deal for Pietrus's expiring one.

Phoenix gets a nice outside shooter in Marrow and the hopes a trip back out west will revitalize Outlaw.ย  Getting rid of Childress and his deal is the real kicker for the Suns in this trade.

Hornets, Trail Blazers: Roy Comes to Help Chris Paul

8 of 14

Blazers Receive: Emeka Okafor

Hornets Receive: Brandon Roy

Why it Works:ย  Roy may not have anything left, or he may regain his All-Star form.ย  For the Hornets, the risk is worth the reward if it means they can get Paul to stay.ย

If Paul leaves anyway, the worst they've done is essentially swap one bad contract for another.

The Blazers currently have 63-year-old Marcus Camby and 65-year-old Greg Oden at center.ย  Obviously, an upgrade is needed.ย

Okafor isn't great but he's a solid player who would fill a huge hole for them and also relieve them of Roy's contract.ย  With Wesley Matthews on board, they can afford to make the deal even if Roy returns to his old form.

Heat, Bucks: Miami Gets Dooling for PG Help

9 of 14

Heat Receive: Keyon Dooling

Bucks Receive: Eddie House, Dexter Pittman

Why it Works:ย  The Bucks are point guard heavy with Brandon Jennings, Beno Udrih, Shaun Livingston and Dooling so loosing Keyon won't be a big deal for them.ย  Acquiring House balances them out better and provides a nice outside threat.

For Miami, they have close to no tradeable assets so they're very limited in the moves they can make.ย  Dooling is a veteran point guard that can help them out and mentor Norris Cole and Mario Chalmers.ย

There's nothing Eddie House does that Mike Miller can't, so trading House won't hurt them a bit.

Wolves, Raptors: Beasley, Calderon Switch Borders

10 of 14

Wolves Receive: Jose Calderon

Raptors Receive: Michael Beasely, Luke Ridnour

Why it Works:ย  The Wolves need to move Beasley, plain and simple.ย  Having too many cooks in their forwards kitchen is just destined to fail.ย  This trade allows Derrick Williams to start from day one and remove any headaches Beasley may have caused with cut minutes.ย

Someone at the position had to go, and it sure isn't going to be Kevin Love or Williams. Calderon provides a nice mentor for Ricky Rubio for the two years he has left on his deal.

The Raptors roll the dice with Beasley who only has one year left on his contract so if it doesn't work out, they're not committed to him for the long term.ย  They also get to move Calderon's contract that still has two years and nearly $20 million left.

Mavericks, Jazz: Dallas Adds More Veteran Help

11 of 14

Mavs Receive: Raja Bell, second-round pick

Jazz Receive: Corey Brewer

Why it Works:ย  Not a big trade here, but why make one when you're the champs?ย  DeShawn Stevenson is a free agent, and the Mavs could use another veteran in the backcourt to go with J.J. Barea and Roddy Beaubois.ย

Bell is tough and brings playoff experience at a relatively low price.

For the Jazz they acquire more of a SG/SF combo to help fill they void should they not resign Andrei Kirilenko.ย  Bell struggled in his first year with Utah and with the drafting of Alec Burks was destined to see his minutes cut.ย

Brewer is a younger, more athletic option.

Bulls, Sixers: Boozer Goes to Philly

12 of 14

Bulls Receive: Andre Iguodala, Elton Brand

Sixers Receive: Carlos Boozer, Luol Deng

Why it Works: Bulls, unhappy with Boozers play, get a rejuvenated Elton Brand and a great perimeter defender in Iguodala who could solve their shooting guard woe's.ย

In the long run, they also save money with Brand's contract coming off the books two years sooner than Boozers.

For Philly, Elton Brand never really worked out and they appear to be willing to move A.I.ย  For two players they really don't mind losing, getting Boozer and Deng is quite a return which keeps them in the playoffs for what appears to be years to come.

Thunder, Rockets: Kevin Martin Joins OKC

13 of 14

Thunder Receive: Kevin Martin

Rockets Receive: James Harden, Cole Aldrich, Royal Ivey

Why it Works:ย  The Thunder are a very young and talented team, which could use a veteran presence in the backcourt.ย  Martin is an underrated star and tremendous scorer with a high PER.ย

Losing Harden hurts, but he's due for an extension soon which the Thunder may be pressed to meet since they'll need to extend Russell Westbrook's deal first.

The Rockets aren't going anywhere if they make the playoffs and with the Yao Ming era officially coming to an end the best thing to do now is collect young talent.ย  Harden is a great piece to build around, and they also get a true center in Aldrich.ย

Hawks, Magic, Kings: Dwight Goes Home

14 of 14

Hawks Receive: Dwight Howard, Hedo Turkoglu

Magic Receive: Al Horford, Marcus Thornton, Jason Thompson, Marvin Williams (Mo Williams)

Kings Receive: Josh Smith, Quentin Richardson

Why it Works:ย  Even if Dwight Howard signs an extension with the Magic, the team is going downhill, fast.ย  Age and bad contracts are everywhere you look so it would be best for both parties involved to deal the superstar center.

Atlanta gets their hometown hero in Howard, and also gets an overpriced but still somewhat productive Turkoglu.ย  Together with Joe Johnson, Jeff Teague and possibly Jamal Crawford, the Hawks are poised to join the East's elite.

The Magic get a great return with young stars in Horford and Thornton, along will great potential players in Thompson and Williams (Marvin, or Mo if they make the previous trade with Los Angeles).ย  They also rid themselves of Turkoglu's contract.

Sacramento finds themselves with a pretty formidable starting five after adding Josh Smith as a SF/PF in a lineup with Tyreke Evans and DeMarcus Cousins.ย
