NBA: Updated Post-Draft Championship Odds for All 30 Teams in 2011-12

Ethan NorofJun 27, 2011

Now that the 2011 NBA Draft is firmly in the rear view mirror, it's time to focus on the 2011-12 regular season.

After the Dallas Mavericks took home their first Larry O'Brien Trophy in franchise history this season, could there be another unexpected champion on the horizon?

The Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat are at the forefront of the pack, but neither is a lock to win it all.

Is your team next?

Minnesota Timberwolves

1 of 30

Odds: 300:1

The T-Wolves have had a successful couple of weeks with the additions of Derrick Williams and Ricky Rubio, but they're not going to be a contender for the crown anytime soon.

This team is going to have a tough time climbing from the cellar in an increasingly competitive league, so don't expect them to make postseason noise next year.

Toronto Raptors

2 of 30

Odds: 300:1

Like the T-Wolves, the Raptors are a very long way off from making any sort of run toward a successful postseason.

Now that they have Jonas Valanciunas in the fold, the club could entertain trading Andrea Bargnani in an effort to improve in other areas, but regardless of what they do, it's going to take more than just a little tinkering to fix the mess.

Detroit Pistons

3 of 30

Odds: 250:1

The Pistons improved their future with the additions through the draft, but they didn't have much on their roster from last season to like.

Brandon Knight will help to lead the re-building effort with Greg Monroe and Austin Daye, but they're still lacking a dynamic scorer and probably need to land a star before they can be taken seriously.

Washington Wizards

4 of 30

Odds: 200:1

The Wizards were atrocious last season, but their future got a lot brighter with a very successful draft that landed them Jan Vesely, Chris Singleton and Shelvin Mack.

The club has an incredible amount of youth and talent, and if they can supplement them with the proper veterans, they are going to be a lot better than most would imagine.

Sacramento Kings

5 of 30

Odds: 200:1

Similar to the Wizards, Sacramento has a ton of intriguing young talent, but not a ton of depth. With Fredette now in the fold, the team will likely play a big backcourt that features Tyreke Evans at the point.

If Evans and DeMarcus Cousins can continue to grow, this team is just a couple of free agent additions away from playing a much stronger brand of basketball than they've shown previously.

Utah Jazz

6 of 30

Odds: 150:1

The Jazz had a successful evening, landing both Enes Kanter and Alec Burks, but their team played really poorly toward the end of last season and needs to come together as a single cohesive unit.

If the team can map out a blueprint for success and successfully execute with regularity, they could be fun to watch, but probably won't compete for anything meaningful over the next couple of seasons.

Cleveland Cavaliers

7 of 30

Odds: 150:1

The Cavaliers really dropped the ball on draft night after drafting Tristan Thompson at No. 4, and their future doesn't look any clearer despite holding two of the top five picks.

Kyrie Irving will help usher in a new era of basketball in Cleveland, but it's going to take a lot more than they've currently got to even be considered in the championship conversation.

New Orleans Hornets

8 of 30

Odds: 150:1

The Hornets are in serious financial trouble, and there is just no way that this team is going to be competing for a championship next season.

Chris Paul is likely to be traded by the deadline, and that's going to drop their odds even further from where they currently stand.

Phoenix Suns

9 of 30

Odds: 120:1

The Suns drafted Markieff Morris to be the power forward of the future, but a pairing of Morris with Gortat down low isn't going to do a thing against the intimidating size of the other clubs in the Western Conference.

Phoenix is really in an interesting spot right now as they prepare for life after Steve Nash, and their best bet toward another playoff push is probably dealing the two-time MVP at the deadline.

Charlotte Bobcats

10 of 30

Odds: 120:1

The Bobcats had an awesome draft that welcomed Bismack Biyombo and Kemba Walker to the team, but their roster is pretty void of the talent necessary to win a crown.

They've got some intriguing youth and the club is packed with potential, but they don't have any of the experience that has proven necessary to achieve the crown.

Golden State Warriors

11 of 30

Odds: 120:1

These odds will move exponentially higher if they decide to move Monta Ellis after drafting both Klay Thompson and Charles Jenkins, but they're already pretty astronomical as it currently stands.

This team has been a complete failure on the defensive end of the floor, and until they can prove that they can lock up the attack of the league's toughest competition, they're not going to go anywhere.

Milwaukee Bucks

12 of 30

Odds: 120:1

The Milwaukee Bucks added some intriguing talent with Beno Udrih, Stephen Jackson and Tobias Harris, but a potential backcourt pairing of Jackson and Brandon Jennings is going to be tough to watch.

There isn't a ton to love about the championship prospects of this club, but I have an odd feeling that Milwaukee isn't quite done making moves yet.

Indiana Pacers

13 of 30

Odds: 120:1

The Pacers didn't hold onto their draft selections, but they emerged with George Hill from San Antonio, and that will be a major asset for the young club moving forward.

They are a scrappy bunch and can definitely play above what their talent dictates, but ultimately, they're going to need to add a legitimate superstar to pair with Danny Granger if they're serious about making a run with the current core.

New Jersey Nets

14 of 30

Odds: 100:1

The Nets had a strong draft, nabbing both Marshon Brooks and Jordan Williams, and if they can add some serious talent in free agency, they can begin to really make some noise.

They've already got Deron Williams and Brook Lopez, so if the youngsters deliver on their potential and the club finds a third member to their "Big Three," New Jersey may not be a bottom feeder for much longer.

Los Angeles Clippers

15 of 30

Odds: 80:1

The Clippers found two second-round gems in Trey Thompkins and Travis Leslie, and they've already got a lot of young talent with Blake Griffin and Eric Gordon.

If the club can add a legitimate superstar to pair with their promising core, it's not going to be very long before people stop referring to them as the "other" Los Angeles club.

Philadelphia 76ers

16 of 30

Odds: 80:1

If the Sixers move Andre Iguodala before next season begins, that is a move that could really drop the team down quite a bit on this list depending upon the return.

If they keep the same core intact, draft sleeper Nikola Vucevic will help to build to an already rapidly re-building core that surprised a lot of people last season.

Houston Rockets

17 of 30

Odds: 75:1

The Rockets really left their mark on the draft and grabbed three first-round talents despite only having two picks in the inaugural round.

Houston has a ton of future promise, but all of the potential probably won't start to blossom until at least a few years from now.

Atlanta Hawks

18 of 30

Odds: 75:1

The Hawks would be wise to move Josh Smith in the pursuit of a true center, because that would really improve their hopes of winning with the current core.

They added big man Keith Benson in the draft, but he's going to take some time to develop, and the Hawks' window to be competitive is open right now.

Portland Trail Blazers

19 of 30

Odds: 70:1

Despite trading for Raymond Felton, the Blazers really had a poor draft when it came to the actual selection process.

They've got some really nice pieces in LaMarcus Aldridge and Wes Matthews moving forward, but they need to add another star to that mix before they can compete for a title.

Memphis Grizzlies

20 of 30

Odds: 65:1

The Grizzlies surprised a lot of people last season with an insanely successful playoff run, and there's no doubting that they'll be back to make some more noise.

Josh Selby is a great piece to add to an already dynamic core, and this club isn't all that far off from making a legitimate title run if they continue to evolve as a group.

New York Knicks

21 of 30

Odds: 65:1

The Knicks already have Melo and Amar'e in the fold, and clubs with two superstars in the starting five should never be counted out.

New York needs to address their depth within the second unit, but if they can facilitate a trade for an elite point guard at the deadline, fans are going to be singing a very different tune.

Denver Nuggets

22 of 30

Odds: 50:1

The Nuggets re-acquired Andre Miller, brought in rookies Kenneth Faried and Jordan Hamilton and had a very successful 2011 NBA draft night overall.

The team is really thriving in the era after Carmelo, and they're going to be making a strong push a lot sooner than most people think. It's not going to come this season, but it shouldn't take too long.

Orlando Magic

23 of 30

Odds: 25:1

Dwight Howard wants to see "significant changes" to the Magic roster before he's going to sign an extension, and Otis Smith isn't likely to blow it up again after the Gilbert Arenas disaster.

This club seems to fall just short in almost every season, and they're going down hard and fast if they are forced to trade Howard at the deadline.

San Antonio Spurs

24 of 30

Odds: 25:1

The Spurs absolutely robbed Kawhi Leonard away from the Pacers, but they didn't do much else to address their aging core of players.

They need a lot of help along a front line that needs to give as much rest to Tim Duncan as possible, and it should be interesting to see if the veteran players can hold up over the course of another campaign.

Boston Celtics

25 of 30

Odds: 15:1

The Boston championship window is really beginning to close at a rapid rate, but this group of talented players isn't ready to slam it shut quite yet.

They desperately need to re-vamp the second unit after their carousel of veterans failed miserably last season, and plugging those holes with productive players will be key in returning to the finals.

Oklahoma City Thunder

26 of 30

Odds: 12:1

The Thunder have made some postseason noise for two straight seasons, and I have a good feeling that 2011-12 is finally the year that they hit full stride.

A healthy Kendrick Perkins will be critical for this club, and Russell Westbrook will have to defer to Kevin Durant more often, but those are minor adjustments that could result in a major gain.

Chicago Bulls

27 of 30

Odds: 10:1

The Chicago Bulls are desperate for perimeter help, and after failing to address the need through the draft, it's clear that the team must be targeting a shooter in free agency.

Jason Richardson would be an excellent pickup for the club, but it's still to be determined as to what kind of salary restrictions they will have with a newly negotiated Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Los Angeles Lakers

28 of 30

Odds: 8:1

The Lakers were torn apart at the seams by the Dallas Mavericks, but their very talented core still remains a major threat to any team in the league.

The club is looking to make a serious splash and has been rumored to be targeting several big names, but no matter which players comprise the roster next season, Kobe Bryant's club will still be considered a favorite at the forefront of of the pack.

Dallas Mavericks

29 of 30

Odds: 7:2

If the Mavericks can re-sign Tyson Chandler, this is a team that isn't going to look much different from the one that just captured the 2011 championship.

Adding Rudy Fernandez in a draft day trade was a major win for the club, as he'll be a threat on the perimeter, and the Mavericks won't surprise anyone if they enjoy success once again in the next campaign.

Miami Heat

30 of 30

Odds: 5:2

Despite the Heat falling apart at the most important juncture of the season, this club simply has too much talent to be ignored moving forward.

Although they didn't win a title in their first season together, reaching the finals was extraordinarily impressive given how they looked at the beginning of the year, and there's little doubt that they're going to contend for the crown as long as they have the current core firmly in place.
