Paul Pierce Says He Wouldn't Trade Himself Now for LaMarcus Aldridge
San Antonio Spurs forward LaMarcus Aldridge is apparently on the trade block, but Paul Pierce isn't impressed by his value.
When asked on ESPN's The Jump if Aldridge was worth a top-10 pick in a deal, the now-retired Pierce explained why this was a major stretch:
"If I was still playing and San Antonio said 'We'll give you LaMarcus Aldridge for Paul Pierce,' I'm turning that down if I'm Doc [Rivers]," Pierce said.
Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio reported Wednesday the Spurs were looking to trade Aldridge for a potential top-10 pick. He listed the Sacramento Kings as a top option.
Aldridge averaged 17.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game last season, although these were his worst numbers since his rookie season in 2006-07. Pierce also saw issues with his effort during the postseason.
"What I saw from him in the playoffs was a player that was unenthused, wasn't excited to play, didn't give his all," he added. "It was just like his motor was not there no more."
While this assessment has merit, the likely future Hall of Famer wasn't exactly a force in his last year before retirement. Pierce averaged just 3.2 points in 25 games for the Los Angeles Clippers in 2016-17, making him slightly less valuable than he might think.
Considering Aldridge has been an All-Star in five of the last six years, at least some NBA teams will be calling the Spurs for a possible deal.
