Westbrook 1st Player Since Michael Jordan with 5 Straight Triple-Doubles
Oklahoma City Thunder star point guard Russell Westbrook dropped 28 points, 17 rebounds and 12 assists in Sunday's 101-92 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.
In doing so, he emerged as the first player to post five straight triple-doubles since Michael Jordan did so in 1989, per ESPN Stats & Info. Jordan added two more to his streak and finished with seven consecutive.
Westbrook is one of just four players to reach such an achievement—joining all-time greats such as Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson, per Elias Sports Bureau (via ESPN Stats & Info).
Sunday was also Westbrook's 10th triple-double of the season. He needed only 21 games to reach double digits in the category, second-quickest in NBA history to Robertson's 12 games.
On an interesting side note, he became the first player with 20 points and 10 turnovers in a triple-double effort since Charles Barkley in 1986-87.
Westbrook's five-game triple-double streak happens to coincide with Oklahoma City's five-game winning streak. Unfortunately, each of the contests came against teams with losing records at the time of the game.
The streak of opponents with losing records will continue through the club's next tilt against the Atlanta Hawks, who have lost six straight games. However, that luck will run out Friday when Oklahoma City hosts the Houston Rockets (currently 13-7).
Kevin Durant's departure this offseason moved Westbrook into the solo star role for the Thunder. While the ninth-year pro likely has plenty of his career remaining, he's taken full advantage of his position this season and placed his name among some all-time greats in the record books.
