Breaking Down Air Jordan Retro 4 Doernbecher and Air Jordan Spizike Shoes

Kyle VassaloNov 5, 2011

After a relatively slow October, Jordan came out swinging in November and pumped in shoes that are going to blow your mind. Jordan is dropping the Air Jordan Retro 4 "Doernbecher" and the Air Jordan Spizike Shoes in Orange and Blue.

Let's take a look at the shoes that have Jordan enthusiasts sleepless and calling in sick to work to get their hands on.

It's only fitting that this shoe features an electric green color, as electric is the only way to describe it. With the Superman insignia emblazoned on the tongue, these shoes are some of the loudest and most powerful in the collection.

Wow Factor: 10 out of 10

These are the sort of shoes that force everyone around you to look. They force you to take a step back and appreciate them, and even with a black backdrop, they are still jaw-dropping.

Design: 8 out of 10

The color scheme is crazy in this shoe, but it works. The blue mesh, the green streaking across the bottom, the black, the Superman symbol on the tongue—it all works. If you look really closely, you can see upward- and downward-facing arrows in the black, which don't really do anything for the shoe and drop the overall design score slightly.

Overall Swag Grade: 9 out of 10

The shoe would have to be spectacular, like the Jordan 9s, to get a 10 out of 10 here. These shoes still get a sky-high swag grade, though. In a word, these shoes are ruthless. They're exciting and, above all else, unique. The swag factor is through the roof on these one-of-a-kind shoes.

Air Jordan Spizik—"New York Knicks" (Blue)

These are the sort of shoes that Knicks fans should mount on his wall next to their Reggie Miller dartboards. These futuristic shoes definitely rock the blue rendition of the Knicks' color scheme, but it's almost like they dropped 100 years too early. The world isn't ready for this shoe just yet.

Wow Factor: 8 out of 10

This shoe was going for the wow factor, but it underachieves. Upon seeing these shoes for the first time, did your eyes widen? Were you actually wowed? The in-your-face color scheme and seemingly random design makes the shoe hard to figure out, but it doesn't have nearly the wow factor of the first shoe.

Design: 6 out of 10

This shoe has the sort of incomprehensible look that makes it hard to pinpoint exactly what's wrong with it, but something certainly is. It almost look like they randomly assorted various features on purpose. The veiny-looking animal print isn't working. The whole thing isn't working.

Overall Swag Grade: 7 out of 10

Meh. This shoe isn't all it's kicked up to be—no pun intended. If you are a Knicks fan, I understand why you've got to have it. Broncos, Boise State and Mets fans can also have fun with the design. Unless you've got an obnoxious amount of blue and orange in your closet, these shoes aren't nearly impressive enough to pursue.

Air Jordan Spizik—"New York Knicks" (Orange)

This shoe is orange. Not like the blue version of the shoe is blue, either. This shoe is distractingly orange. It's almost obnoxiously orange. Jordan has to be commended for not pulling any punches. With the good comes the bad, though. It's vibrant, but the almost uniform color is lacking.

Wow Factor: 9 out of 10

These shoes are shocking. They don't leave you wanting more upon first glance. In fact, they make you shield your eyes a bit, but they pack the wow factor. Love them or hate them, these unbelievable shoes make a big statement.

Design: 7 out of 10

These shoes have all the shortcomings of their blue version, but they aren't as noticeable given the blanketed orange look to the shoe. That's both good and bad. It may not have the look of random assembly of its blue counterpart, but it doesn't offer anything else either.

Overall Swag Grade: 8 out of 10

What does this shoe bring to the table? It's orange. We've established that. If you are looking for one-dimensional orange shoes, you couldn't ask for a better shoe. If you aren't, which I would imagine most of us aren't, you could take or leave these shoes. Not a must-have, not a total flop.
