NBA Trade Rumors: 3 Reasons Andre Iguodala Won't Survive Another Trade Deadline

Chris TernateJul 28, 2011

As the lockout continues, we see players play overseas or in friendly exhibitions stateside, with the intent to get a little work in to stay in shape for the next season—whenever it should begin.

No one can be quite sure when exactly the lockout will end, but it seems as though the players themselves aren't ruling out that it would at least end sooner than later.

That said, regardless of whether the lockout is in full effect, there are some issues that will inevitably be resolved once league activity resumes.

One such issue, is player transaction.

The new collective bargaining agreement may be involved with how a player may be traded, in terms of salary cap space, etc.

However it won't change the fact that there are some players who will just have to be traded and let's face it, some players, lockout or not, are just destined to be traded, eventually.

So now, here are three reasons why Andre Iguodala won't be surviving another trade deadline.

The Sixers Lack of Size

1 of 3

With Tony Battie and Spencer Hawes on the market for free agency, the Sixers could possibly lose their only two centers and could result in an undersized Elton Brand or Marreese Speights moving over to the center position.

The Sixers' lack of size in the paint to makes it hard for them to hold their own against some of the bigger teams in the league, which is partially why Andre Iguodala's name came up when discussing trade options.

The most promising trade regarding a center came in the form of a deal between the Los Angeles Clippers and Sixers, which would swap Iguodala for former All-Star center Chris Kaman.

While many fans are not a big fan of the swap, it remains one of the more plausible trades for the team, rather than a swap for Monta Ellis; mainly because of the center issue.

Great Expectations

When Andre Iguodala was drafted with the ninth pick overall in the 2004 NBA Draft, he was expected to be one of the new focal points heading into the post-Allen Iverson era.

During the regular season, he averaged nine points five rebounds and an assist during the regular season. Last season he averaged 14 points and five rebounds and has largely remained around these averages for most of his career.

Iguodala was touted to become the next Scottie Pippen—a fantastic athlete and well rounded player with a knack for defending.

However while fantastic on the defensive end of the court, what Iguodala always lacked was a consistency on the offensive end.

Post-Allen Iverson, Iguodala was expected to carry much of the defensive load. However in the current incarnation of the Sixers' roster, he has some much needed help from Elton Brand and youngsters Evan Turner and Jrue Holiday.

The team gained some success, turning the season around finishing 41-41 and earning a playoff berth. However, they were ultimately eliminated by the Miami Heat.

If the Sixers are to get to the next level, Iguodala would need to either live up to his potential, or the Sixers should move him for a piece that would simply fit better with their young nucleus of Holiday and Turner.

Not a Perfect Fit

Andre Iguodala played last season in arguably one of the more talented Sixer squads he's been on, and while they did lose to the Eastern Conference Champion Miami Heat, Iguodala's play on the offensive end was somewhat uninspired.

Defensively, Iguodala hounded LeBron James and Dwyane Wade and showed an improvement in his assist category for the season overall.

However despite being well rounded, he just hasn't been able to produce at the level the Sixers want him to be at.

Iguodala was expected to be the next superstar of the team, yet he has always been just on the cusp of becoming an All-Star.

As promising as he was and still could be, the potentially great Andre Iguodala (the next incarnation of Scottie Pippen) probably won't come around in Philadelphia.

He's hinted at a desire to play somewhere else; and alongside Team USA in the Olympics he played superbly.

Without a Jordan-esque player to elevate his game in Philadelphia, it's probably not expected for Iguodala to really thrive with the Sixers.

Ultimately, it's beginning to seem as though he really just isn't a good fit for the team and would be better off being shipped out in exchange for a better fitting piece to the puzzle.
