Cavaliers Attempting to Trade for No. 2 Pick with Timberwolves
Chris Broussard of ESPN.com is reporting that the Cleveland Cavaliers are attempting to trade for the No. 2 pick with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Cavs already own the No. 1 and No. 4 picks in the draft but are looking to move that fourth pick up to two.
The reported deal involves three teams. The Cavs would absorb Richard Hamilton from the Detroit Pistons and take their pick No. 8 as well. This would be done by using the $14.6 million trade exception the Cavs own from the LeBron James sign and trade. They would then buy out Hamilton's remaining $25 million and make him a free agent.
The Cavs would then send picks Nos. 4 and 8 to the Timberwolves for pick No. 2.
This would, of course, allow the Cavs to take both Kyrie Irving and Derrick Williams... the only two legitimate players in this year's draft.
I'm all for this! Why the heck not?
Dan Gilbert has the money to do it, and the more solid assets you can add, the better. This draft is very weak, and getting the only two good players in it would be huge.
There are already a million questions about what the Cavs should do with that pick at No. 4. And after failing to swing a deal with Memphis for Rudy Gay, the options are very slim.
I don't think this would drastically change the Cavs'ย immediate future, but both players are guys who can play solid roles on a playoff team in the future.
At this point, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
