Memphis Grizzlies' O.J. Mayo: Reasons for the Nets To Obtain the Troubled Guard

Artem AltmanJan 28, 2011

"It was an honest mistake, but I take full responsibility for my actions," O. J. Mayo said in the statement released by the team. "I apologize to my fans, teammates and the Grizzlies organization for regrettably not doing the necessary research about what supplements I can put in my body."

An honest mistake or not, the Nets should make their move to get O.J. Mayo.

And I mean RIGHT NOW!

O.J. Mayo should not be considered as troubled as...let's say Michael Vick, but, in this day and age it doesn't even take a fraction of what Michael Vick did in order to brand someone troubled. Wouldn't you agree?

Mayo already has had his share of questionable behavior, unless we forget the NCAA investigation into Mayo receiving improper benefits. Early last year, the NCAA determined Mayo was an ineligible student-athlete and as a result, the University of Southern California had to vacate all of its wins from the lone season that Mayo had played for the school.

All is not lost with Mayo.

As the aforementioned Michael Vick has to show, everyone can seek redemption for the misdeeds of the past.

Mayo's 10 game suspension could be a blessing in disguise. A blessing for Nets who would benefit greatly from an addition of a player with Mayo's scoring abilities.

If Memphis does chooses to part ways with Mayo (a fight with Tony Allen earlier in the year hasn't helped his cause for Memphis to retain him), then the Nets could certainly make a strong offer for the young guard. The Nets wouldn't offer Derrick Favors, but a package including one or two draft picks and maybe Anthony Morrow could work.

Here is a chance for the Nets to acquire a player whose promising career has hit a speed bump. All they have to do is put the pedal to the metal.
