Updated NFL Fantasy Football Rankings at Week 9: Top 50 QBs for the Rest of 2010

Nick CaronNov 4, 2010

The league’s top scoring fantasy player through the first half of the season was San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers.

Despite being without Vincent Jackson and working with a banged up group of receivers outside of that, Rivers has thrown for an impressive 2,649 yards, which puts him on pace for over 5,000 yards this season. He moves up a spot this week over Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers who failed to throw a touchdown last week.

Philadelphia’s quarterback situation is beginning to clear up and it looks like Mike Vick is back to being the starter. He has said that he’s going to have to be more careful when he’s running, but there isn’t a better dual-threat quarterback in the history of the NFL.

Assuming he plays this week, Vick moves up seven spots to ninth among quarterbacks. His counterpart, Kevin Kolb, moves down 13 spots. It’s going to be hard for Kolb to get back on the field unless Vick gets hurt, but he has to be considered the top backup quarterback in the league.

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford returned from injury this week and wow did he look good. Stafford had 212 yards passing and threw a career-high four touchdown passes in the Lions’ big win over the Redskins. He has a tough matchup this week against the Jets, but his remaining schedule still has some nice matchups. He moves up five spots this week and could go up from there if he keeps tossing the ball to “Megatron.”

Brett Favre moves down three more spots this week, all the way down to 24th among QBs. With Randy Moss now gone, Favre is back to an average group of receivers and even though it sounds like Sidney Rice will be back soon, it will probably take some time before he’s in good enough shape to start making a big impact. By then, it might be too late.

Kyle Orton moves down a few spots this week and quite honestly, it’s not his fault. Orton has been on fire this season and currently ranks second in the league in passing yardage, behind only Philip Rivers.

But the problem is that the Broncos have recently activated Tim Tebow and have been using him near the goal line, as I expected they would in the preseason. Orton is still getting his passing yardage, but the big fantasy points always come in the form of touchdowns. If Orton isn’t in near the goal line, then he won’t be getting enough of those points to continue being a fantasy star.
