Inconsiderate? Poor Sportsmanship? Dirty? Tainted Legacy?
These are all things that I've read on almost every sports site on the web in the last three days.
Has anyone looked through all this drama and asked themselves if they know whether Charlie Villanueva is even telling the truth?
The fact of the matter is that no one knows what was said but those two players, and even that seems to be out of sync. One player says he heard one thing, the other player says he heard something else. Doc Rivers says he heard what was said, and he sides with KG.
My question is...WHO CARES?
Trash talk is something that always has been and always will surround the high octane competition in professional sports. Do you think there haven't been harsher things said by other players in other sports? Hockey, where they beat the hell out of one another? Catchers, when trying to rile the batter? Michael Jordan as he's wiping the dirt off his shoes with the rest of the NBA?
Kevin Garnett is a trash talker. There is no doubt about it.
The thing is...he's good at it.
He uses his mouth and his mind to get under the skin of the opposing player, and it messes with their focus.
Many of the greats have done it. Larry Bird is notoriously known as having the worst trash talk in NBA history.
Being able to get the opposing player to lose focus in their game goes hand in hand with being such a great defender. Look at Jordan, Artest, Rodman, Payton, Mourning, and Ben Wallace. All known for being fantastic defenders and annoying trash-talkers.
Do I think it was right of KG to say what Charlie Villanueva claimed he said? No.
Do I think KG even said it? Absolutely not.
Garnett knows his limits. He knows exactly what to do and who to do it to. This is why he's been a multiple time All-Star, MVP, Olympian, and Champion.
Garnett loves to trash-talk, but the man has class, and knows what to say and when to say it. Do any of you honestly think a leader like Garnett is going to spout something like that out where younger, more impressionable players can hear it? No. KG is known throughout the NBA as being the best kind of leader and teammate one could have.
I think Villanueva either misheard him, and has become frustrated with his team to the point of trying to get a little bad press away from the already awful Pistons, and onto a guy that is known for talking the talk.
"I will expose him." These words coming from Villanueva, claiming KG has never been in a fight. Claiming all he does is talk.
This is where he is wrong. You see? KG has been in a fight.
Every night he walks onto the court he's in a fight for the win. He doesn't care about "getting in the ring". This is basketball, damn it.
Kevin Garnett goes out there and wins day in and day out. The guy is in his mid-30s and still putting up double digit points and rebounds on any given night.
The man is a 13-time All-Star. The man has hoisted the championship above his head. The man just beat Charlie V's team by 20 points. I'm pretty sure it's safe to say he's won a fight.
Call me a Celtics fan. Call me a KG fanboy.
I think everyone needs to step back from the drama, and watch the game.
Tainted legacy? I'm quite sure rape allegations won't taint one of the best shooting guards in history's legacy.
And I'm also sure trash talking won't taint one of the best power forwards of all time's legacy.
Get off his back.
