Carmelo Anthony Rumors: An Inconvenient Truth, but He Should Leave Denver

Danny DukkerOct 6, 2010

Carmelo Anthony is one of the best players in the league and there is no denying that. However, just because a player is skilled that does not mean he can fit and win everywhere he goes.

With the recent speculation about the possible departure of Melo, one has to wonder whether it will be better for the Nuggets as well.

The Nuggets are coming off their third consecutive 50 win season and Melo looks better than ever even though he has had a couple of very small injuries.

Nonetheless, in those three seasons the Nuggets only made it out of the first round once, and were dominated on the other two occasions by the Lakers and the Jazz.

It is clear that for a team as talented as the Nuggets are, something is missing. The have one of the best all around point guards in the game, an elite 6th man, a young and athletic center, and some very able role players. Oh, and they also have Carmelo Anthony.

Like I mentioned earlier, Melo is one of the top players in the league.

So, looking at this team, what has gone wrong?

They should be able to make deep playoff runs year after year. There is no excuse.

Something has to change or the Nuggets will become the West's version on the pre-Decision Cavaliers.

They are great through 82 games, but you must not ask them for anything more. The fact is, maybe the person to blame is the guy we least suspect, Mr. Anthony.

Maybe the Nuggets are not the right team for him and maybe he is not the right player for their organization.

Let's think for a moment about what the Nuggets can receive for Melo.

In the offers that have been publicized, it seems like they could get some very good young talent including maybe getting Andre Iguodala and Thadeus Young from the Sixer organization.

If that trade goes through, now the Nuggets can have multiple scoring threats on the floor at the same time, creating potentials for enormous mismatches. Can you picture Al Harrington, Thadeus Young, Iggy, and Chauncey on the floor all at once?

They also have a post presence in Nene who can also score if need be. Bottom line, the potential the Nuggets will have will be absolutely enormous. Maybe that is the problem, not enough scoring threats. I mean think about it!

Last year, the three biggest threats that faced the opposing teams were Chauncey, Melo, and Jr. Smith.

This year, on the other hand, they have the potential of about 5 or more threats.

We can also look on the other side of the spectrum and see if they want to improve their defense.

The Nuggets were 20th in the league in points allowed. That is not what makes a championship team. Oh and let's, once again bring it all back to the name at the top: Carmelo Anthony.

If there was one thing that people don't like about Melo, it would be his defense, which quiet frankly is nonexistent.

They could try and trade for some defensive help and become a tough team in that regard. Whatever choice they decide to make, one thing is certain, and that is the fact that the Nuggets cannot win with Melo.

Besides, there is also one final fact that I would like to throw your way. That is simply this: Melo is in his contract year. Last season Amar'e Stoudemire was in his contract year and the Suns decided to go with the short term decision of keeping him, and "maybe" have him come back; he didn't.

Now the Nuggets can take the same risk and lose Melo for nothing or receive a big payout in return. The more they wait, the worse the offers become.

Some might not like to admit it, but that is why it is Inconvenient, like it or not, it is in the best interest of the Nuggets to get rid of Carmelo Anthony and the sooner the better.
