Denver Nuggets Should Trade Carmelo Anthony Before He's a Free Agent

Kelsey GivensAug 22, 2010

Carmelo Anthony is set to become a free agent in the NBA next summer after his contract with the Denver Nuggets expires. It would be in the best interest of the Nuggets to trade him now, since it seems that he doesn’t want to re-sign with the team after next season.

The Nuggets have offered Anthony an extension on his contract, according to reports from ESPN.

The team is starting early to give themselves as much time as possible to try and persuade Anthony to stay or to begin shopping around to find someone else who is just as good or even better to fill his spot.

The extension has been on the table for a while now, and it seems Anthony doesn’t have much interest in resigning with the Denver team.

If Anthony does want to leave the Nuggets, it would be in the best interest of the team to trade him this season, while he is still under contract, in order to be compensated for losing one of their better players.

Even though it is clear, since the extension offer is still on the table, that the Nuggets are hoping Anthony opts to extend his contract with the Denver team, they are at least being proactive and realizing that may not happen.

By shopping around, they are ensuring that one way or the other they will be able to fill Anthony’s spot on their team.

Rumor has it there are several teams the Nuggets are possibly looking to trade Anthony to.

According to reports from ESPN, some of the top teams the Nuggets are looking to trade Anthony to include the New York Knicks, New Jersey Nets, Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets, and the New Orleans Hornets.

It is rumored that Anthony’s top choice is to be traded to the Knicks, but that doesn’t seem like a very likely scenario.

The top three teams that would be most likely to trade for Anthony and could give the Nuggets a fair trade for their loss are the Hornets, the Rockets, and the Nets.

As it stands now, it seems it would be better for the Nuggets to trade Anthony this season so that they can at least receive something for losing him from their team.
