NBA Rumors: Tracy McGrady Could Sign With the Detroit Pistons

Aaron YoungAug 8, 2010

The wait may be over for Tracy McGrady.

After weeks of speculation linking McGrady to the Chicago Bulls, it is being reported the Detroit Pistons have extended a contract offer to the veteran swingman.

DraftExpress reported Saturday that the Pistons have offered McGrady a one-year deal, most likely worth the veteran minimum of $1.35 million.

While some sources are reporting a done deal, others are much more skeptical.

Joe Dumars, the general manager for the Detroit Pistons, says that any report announcing a done deal is premature.

He did, however, acknowledge the franchise's interest in the 6'8" former scoring champion on his twitter account saying, "We have not signed Tracy McGrady, discussing it, definitely haven't signed."

With the signing of McGrady, the Pistons could try to complete a trade that would move Tayshaun Prince or Richard Hamilton, a deal they have long tried to make.

If McGrady does indeed come to terms with the 2004 NBA Champions, the widespread rumors making him a Chicago Bull would be effectively dead.

Even before the reported Pistons deal, any agreement with Chicago seemed unlikely after negotiations broke down when head coach Tom Thibodeau and his staff feared McGrady would be reluctant in taking a secondary role.

Now with the seven-time All-Star out of the picture for the Bulls, they will most likely pursue a trade that would bring Portland Trail Blazers swingman Rudy Fernandez to the Windy City.

Last season, Tracy McGrady missed a significant portion of the season early on before returning to the Houston Rockets.

When he did recover, he found himself out of coach Rick Adelman's rotation, which led to him being traded to the New York Knicks.

In 24 games in New York, McGrady averaged 9.4 points, 3.9 assists, and 3.7 rebounds in 26 minutes per game.

More is expected to come Monday relating to all aforementioned deals.
