Former NBA PG Kevin Johnson Allegedly Hit with Pie, Punches Protester
Sacramento mayor and former NBA player Kevin Johnson was allegedly involved in a "bloody" incident during a benefit dinner at his former high school on Wednesday, per Nick Miller of the East Bay Express.
Miller cited sources who said a protester threw a pie at Johnson's face and then "reportedly said something to [him]," which prompted the former point guard to "allegedly tackle the protester and punch him in the face 'repeatedly,' more than half a dozen times."
Miller wrote that one witness described the scene as a "bloody pulp" after the incident. CBS Sacramento CBS13 provided the mugshot of the protester:
On Thursday, the protester, Sean Thompson, said Johnson overreacted, adding that he was "angry Johnson devoted so much political energy to an arena for the city's basketball team and not to other needs such as education and homelessness," per Alison Noon of the Associated Press.
Johnson addressed the situation on Twitter in the aftermath:
According to Miller, "Protesters occasionally have dogged Johnson on the heels of sexual-misconduct allegations that resurfaced last year."
Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated wrote in 2015 that ESPN elected to delay a 30 for 30 film that featured Johnson as a primary character because of the "allegations of sexual misconduct."
Johnson allegedly addressed the crowd after the scuffle. The Sacramento Police Department released a statement that said the protester who threw the pie at Johnson was "arrested on felony charges of assaulting a public official."
Johnson played from 1987 to 2000 for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Phoenix Suns. The three-time All-Star helped the Suns reach the 1993 NBA Finals alongside teammate Charles Barkley, only to lose to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.
