LeBron James, Chris Paul Served Deposition Notices in Billy Hunter Lawsuit

Rob GoldbergSep 8, 2016

A lawsuit on behalf of former executive director of the National Basketball Players Association Billy Hunter will involve some of the most notable players in the NBA

According to Ethan Sherwood Strauss of ESPN.com, LeBron James, Chris Paul and James Jones were all served with notices of deposition for the wrongful termination lawsuit.

Paul is the current president of the players' union; James is vice president, and Jones is secretary treasurer. According to Strauss, Hunter is suing the NBPA for $10.5 million.

Hunter had been in charge of the players' union since 1996 before then-president Derek Fisher led a charge to vote him out of office in 2013.

"This is our union and we have taken it back," Fisher said at the time, per ESPN.com.

"We want to make it clear that we are here to serve only the best interests of the players," the 18-year NBA veteran added. "No threats, no lies, no distractions will stop us from serving our memberships."

Three years later, Hunter is still involved in a suit for wrongful termination. According to Ken Berger of CBSSports.com, the 73-year-old former NFL player believes the union breached its contract by removing him from power.

As Berger notes, the money in the lawsuit stems from the salary and severance he was owed from a 2010 contract extension.

James, Paul and Jones will now have to testify their knowledge of the situation as well as the workings of the collective bargaining agreement. Hearings are set for Nov. 3.
