Koufos Reportedly Drawing Interest in Trade Market
Sunday, July 10
James Ham of CSN California reported that the Kings "have fielded multiple calls" regarding Koufos, Rudy Gay and Ben McLemore. Ham noted there is "plenty of interest."
On Friday, ESPN's Marc Stein reported the Kings had made Koufos, McLemore and Gay available in a trade for interested teams.
Koufos Has Produced in Limited Role
The Kings gave Koufos a four-year, $33 million contract last summer after he spent two successful seasons as Marc Gasol's backup with the Memphis Grizzlies.
Koufos played well in limited duty for the Kings last season, averaging 6.8 points and 5.4 rebounds in 78 games. He was only on the court for 19 minutes each night, so translating his numbers over 36 minutes results in 12.9 points and 10.3 rebounds, per Basketball-Reference.com.
The Kings need to clear room for the center position. They have Koufos behind DeMarcus Cousins and acquired the rights to Greek center Georgios Papagiannis in June's draft.
Koufos does make a reasonable salary in this era of exploding contracts, as he's owed just over $8 million next season, per Spotrac. He's been used as a starter in the past, so a team in need of a big man could find a way to make a deal worth its while.
