Nick Young Trade Rumors: Latest News and Speculation on Lakers Guard

Lakers' Desire To Offload Young Goes Back to Last 2 Years

Saturday, April 2

The Los Angeles Times' Mike Bresnahan reported that the Lakers will likely reignite the push to trade Young this offseason.

It's clear the team has an untenable situation between him and Russell after the scandal surrounding the video about Young's potential infidelities surfaced.

Russell publicly apologized earlier in the week, per ESPN.com: "I feel as sick as possible. Been asked 110 times, and my answer and feeling stay same. I can't really show my face anywhere without people hating me right now. I don't know. I try to handle it the right way and remember why I'm here, which is to play basketball."

However, that will likely do little to ease the tension between the two players. Lakers head coach Byron Scott talked about how Young has acted differently since the story broke.

"He's been a little bit more, I wouldn't say standoffish, but he's been probably a whole lot quieter than Nick normally is," Scott said, per Bresnahan.

It's hard to see how Young and Russell can be teammates next year.

A league executive told CSNNE.com's A. Sherrod Blakely that the Boston Celtics could put a trade together to get Russell. The 20-year-old figures to be a major part of Los Angeles' rebuild, though, so the Lakers are unlikely to trade him.

Young, on the other hand, is much more expendable. He's averaging 7.3 points per game on 33.9 percent shooting, including 32.5 percent from beyond the arc. The 30-year-old can get hot on occasion, but he's too inconsistent to be a valuable role player on a contending team, which is what the Lakers want to be.

The trouble will be finding a team that is willing to take Young. According to Spotrac, he's owed a little more than $5.4 million next year and has a $5.7 million player option for 2017-18. Even with the salary cap climbing, that cost will turn off a number of teams.

Whether he's traded or released outright, Young likely won't be a Laker for the start of next year.
