Michael Beasley to China: Latest Contract Details, Comments, Reaction
After failing to find a new NBA team, Michael Beasley will instead make the jump overseas. According to Basketball Insiders' David Pick, the 26-year-old forward will sign with Shandong of the Chinese Basketball Association.
If the deal becomes official, Beasley will be starting his second stint in China. During the 2014-15 season, he played 37 games with the Shanghai Sharks, averaging 28.7 points, 10.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists a night, per RealGM.
Following his time in Shanghai, Beasley joined the Miami Heat in late February.
According to NBA.com, the Heat had a 0.7 net rating when he was on the court compared to a minus-5.2 rating when he was on the bench. Beasley also averaged 15.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per 36 minutes, per Basketball-Reference.com. However, he shot just 23.5 percent from three-point range and turned the ball over 1.5 times a night.
While it's plausible a strong season in China could get Beasley back on NBA teams' radars, Pro Basketball Talk's Sean Highkin wrote this move could represent the final nail in his NBA coffin. NBA writer Ethan Skolnick tweeted in June that Beasley simply no longer has much value in the league:
It might be a bit premature to completely write off Beasley playing in the NBA again at some point down the road. He'll turn 27 in January, which is still relatively young.
While he'll never live up to his No. 2 overall pick status, that doesn't preclude him from carving out a minor role with a team in the future. If Chris Andersen, who had off-court issues at one point in his career, can have a renaissance in his early 30s, don't dismiss the possibility it could happen for Beasley.
