Damian Lillard Agrees to 5-Year Extension with Portland Trail Blazers
The Portland Trail Blazers have inked Damian Lillard to a long-term max contract. Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports reports the deal is expected to be for five years and between $125 million and $129 million.
Lillard commented on the new deal, via Spears:
Clearly, the Blazers believe the 24-year-old point guard is a franchise cornerstone whom they don't want to risk losing. He currently has one year left on his contract at around $4.2 million, according to Spotrac.
Portland drafted the Weber State product with the sixth overall pick in the 2012 draft. He's averaged 20.2 points, 6.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds across his first three seasons in the league while appearing in all 82 games each campaign.
Back in April, he spoke with Amy Schwartz of 750 The Game in Portland about a new deal:
For the Blazers, they believe Lillard is worth a max contract at this stage of his career. He's a two-time All-Star selection and has led Portland to the playoffs the last two seasons.
With LaMarcus Aldridge likely leaving in free agency this summer, Portland has some retooling to do. The team was ready to pay Lillard now to prevent another major void from opening down the line.
