Danny Green Re-Signs with Spurs: Latest Contract Details, Comments, Reaction

The San Antonio Spurs announced they have re-signed guard Danny Green to a new contract.

Green spoke about the agreement on July 1, indicating the deal was for four years:

Chris Broussard of ESPN.com reported the deal is worth $45 million over the four years. "I'm very excited to be back, [especially because] it looks like we might be getting some other pieces. We have a good future," Green said, courtesy of Broussard.

It's interesting to think about where Green's career would be if the Spurs didn't give him a second chance. He's coming off a campaign in which he averaged a career-high 11.7 points per game, making him a highly intriguing depth option as his contract expired. Dan McCarney of the San Antonio Express-News declared this a "bargain" for the Spurs.

In 2010, the Cleveland Cavaliers, who drafted him in the second round in 2009, waived him after just one season. The Spurs picked him up on a 10-day contract but let him go before it was even over, which raised some obvious red flags.

Then came the oft-discussed story of Green calling Gregg Popovich to request another chance. The legendary head coach eventually gave in.

The North Carolina product was able to eliminate the questions about his attitude, worked hard to develop his game and eventually found a niche with the Spurs. He earned enough trust to play a key role in the team's run to a championship in 2014.

However, San Antonio was unable to defend its NBA crown and headed into the offseason with a lot of questions to answer. That included Green's status. He told Mike Monroe of the San Antonio Express-News he was hoping to return but admitted there was uncertainty all around.

"Hopefully, I'll be back," Green said. "I love San Antonio. The fans have always supported us, from day one. It sucks that we had such a special group, and things may be changing and not be the same again."

Green got his wish. He's staying in San Antonio and will have a chance to build on the success he's enjoyed over the past handful of years.

It wouldn't be a surprise if the budding guard continues to see his role within the Spurs grow. The team is going through a period of transition that's likely to last a few more years. He'll likely get a chance to prove he's a vital part of the process.

Green is already a strong perimeter defender. He pairs with Kawhi Leonard to create a formidable duo in that regard for San Antonio. Now, it's time for him to add a little more variety to his offensive game. That includes becoming a more effective distributor when he does attack the paint.

He's come a long way during his time in San Antonio. There's still work to do, though.
