Knicks Beat Writer Frank Isola: Stoudemire, Knicks Agree to Buyout
Sunday, Feb. 15
The Knicks may have used the cover of the All-Star Game to work out a deal with Stoudemire that would make the 32-year-old center a free agent. Frank Isola of the New York Daily News reported that the two sides agreed to a contract buyout:
"A league source told the Daily News that Stoudemire and the Knicks formally reached a buyout prior to Sunday's All Star Game and that the six-time All Star, who should clear waivers by Wednesday, could be in a new uniform by the time the league schedule resumes on Thursday.
"
Yahoo Sports' Marc J. Spears added that Stoudemire "gave back close to $2 million in his buyout of the final year of his contract, a source told Yahoo."
Tim MacMahon of ESPNDallas.com reported that the Cleveland Cavaliers might throw their name in the hat as well:
The Clippers are also expected to pursue Stoudemire, per ESPN's Arash Markazi:
Chris Haynes of the Northeast Ohio Media Group countered that Cleveland is instead diverting its attention to another target:
Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski included the San Antonio Spurs in the mix:
Stoudemire has played in 36 games this year, averaging 12.0 points and 6.8 rebounds in 24 minutes a night. While he'll never recapture the magic he showed with the Suns, he could still be a solid piece inside for a title contender.
