Grizzlies Interested in Acquiring Green

ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported early Thursday that the Memphis Grizzlies were planning an aggressive push for Green and Miami's Luol Deng as they attempt to improve their wing spot. While Stein notes the Heat's willingness to trade Deng is in question—he just signed a two-year deal in Miami last summer—the same cannot be said for Green.

The Celtics have been actively pursuing a Green trade for much of the last year. Sean Deveney of Sporting News reported Green and forward Brandon Bass were atop the wish list of players president of basketball operations Danny Ainge would most like to trade. Bass is due to be a free agent at the end of this season.

Green, who holds a player option at $9.2 million for 2015-16, is likely to follow suit. Neither player fits in the long-term plans for Boston, which has stripped away veteran players piece by piece since trading Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce in July 2013. Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated noted the Celtics are currently asking for a first-round pick in return for Green:

In his third full season in Boston (fourth with the Celtics overall), Green is averaging a career-high 17.9 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. He's been the team's leading scorer all season and one of its steadying forces, helping spread the floor while moving between forward spots.

The 25-10 Grizzlies, currently tied for third place in the Western Conference, could sorely use a player with Green's skill set. The combination of Courtney Lee, Vince Carter and Quincy Pondexter has given them some floor spacing on the wing but not nearly enough to win four playoff series. Tayshaun Prince, who's been wildly ineffective since arriving in Memphis, is still being forced to play nearly 24 minutes per game.

Having Prince, whom Stein mentioned as the likely piece headed to Boston (along with picks) for Green, on the floor in April is a spacing killer for the Grizzlies. Green is far from a perfect product—he's shooting a disappointing 31.1 percent from deep after flashing signs of improvement last season—but he is a better all-around player.

But even if it's not to Memphis, Green's unlikely to be wearing green and white after February 19's trade deadline. Ainge's rebuilding plunge is a runaway train that isn't coming back to the station. With Rondo gone, every veteran in that locker room is on notice.
