Rajon Rondo's 5 Most Memorable Passes

Jared ZwerlingDec 26, 2014

If you've ever been startled by some of Rajon Rondo's passes, just ask the man himself. "I even surprise myself sometimes," he said.

Speaking with Bleacher Report's Jared Zwerling at the Boston Celtics' practice center about a week before his trade to Dallas, Rondo, who took B/R inside how he plays point guard, ranked and analyzed his top five favorite passes in his career.

No. 5: The No-Look Flip

1 of 5

"I was trying to drive baseline, but give the defense credit. Patrick Patterson cut me off and I thought about hitting him with the 'Smitty Move.' Some people call it the 'MJ Move.' When I made the turn, I saw Avery Bradley cut baseline out of bounds, so I knew I had the outlet for Avery because I didn't have anywhere else to go. And I was trapped on the sideline, so I made a no-look flip pass to Avery, and that's the scariest spot on the floor, and he knocked it down."

No. 4: Threading the Needle

2 of 5

"It all started with a blocked shot from [Brandon] Bass, a big play for us. Sully [Jared Sullinger] had a great outlet pass, John Wall went for the steal, there were two defenders back, so the only way for me to get [Marcus Thornton] the pass was to thread the needle with a bounce pass. I couldn't have gotten it there any other way. Marcus was running the floor pretty hard and I tried to lead him to the basket just to pick up and lay it in."

No. 3: No-Look, Behind-the-Head

3 of 5

"I threw the ball in the post to KG [Kevin Garnett]. We got a lot of split-action or post-feed-cutting layups, so if I needed a bucket, I'd throw the ball into KG and cut off the post hard. And he was one of the best passers we had on the team. I took Chauncey Billups in, went middle and when I went up to the lay the ball up, Arron Afflalo was there, and I had a quick glance and I knew Ray [Allen] was in the corner.

"The only way I could make that pass was to throw it behind my head with the left hand. I put the ball in the right area and put it right on the money. Ray was always in the right spots. He knew the ball was coming to him. He was always ready to catch and shoot. It's not the assist of the night if you don't make the shot."

No. 2: Behind-the-Back Fake-out

4 of 5

"This is one of my favorites. Mo Williams had a thing where he would run the [opponent] down to slow his steps and LeBron [James] would chase him down, and he was blocking pretty much every guard's shot that year. He got me maybe once or twice before in this series, and I told myself, I wouldn't let him get me again.

"I was either going to dunk the ball or make a certain play, and TA [Tony Allen] ran the floor with me and I timed it well, and I knew LeBron would go up for the block. I acted like I was going up with my eyes and flipped it behind my back. He still tried to make a play on it, but I was able to get the pass off. It was a big play in the third quarter, and I think that got the momentum going."

No. 1: Spin Move, Behind-the-Back

5 of 5

"This is probably the best pass I've ever made, because I went through so many different defenders. I was coming off a spin-move dribble. I usually never use the spin, but I had to make the play. I jumped up in the air and I threw it behind my back through two defenders. Klay Thompson was still trailing the play, and it was right on the money—an unbelievable behind-the-back pass."
