Los Angeles Lakers Becoming Twitter's Favorite Punchline
USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Lakers suffered another smackdown on Thursday night, and not just against the New York Knicks. As if a 116-107 loss at Madison Square Garden wasn't bad enough, the Twittersphere added insult after insult to the injured egosphere of the Purple and Gold.

Not that Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard and company didn't deserve the slights made at their expense. They fell behind by 26 points in the first half and didn't make a game of it until Carmelo Anthony's scorching-hot hand was cooled by an ankle injury in the third quarter.

Twitter can be a cruel place for losers. But hey, at least some of the wisecracks were worth a chuckle or two.

The Kamnetzky Brothers from ESPN Los Angeles found the ads amidst the beatdown to be geared perfectly—almost too perfectly—toward the needs of the viewing audience:

Bomani Jones, of Around The Horn fame, had an easy time tying chatroom etiquette for laughs:

In a related story, the Big East is reforming as a basketball-only conference, which East Coast hoops maven Adam Zagoria thinks might present an easy out for LA:

Like clockwork, ESPN sports business guru Darren Rovell weighed in with the sort of witty insight you'd expect from...well, a sports business guru:

It was only a matter of time before someone compared the Lakers to the Charlotte Bobcats. The question is, what does NBA.com's John Schuhmann win for his primacy?

As Lakers Nation noted, Thursday's big game was a doozy...if you enjoy hearing about what Charles Barkley has stored on his DVR:

If the Lakers are going to find help on the free-agent market, Zach Harper of CBSSports.com thinks they should start by looking in their own backyard—Hollywood:

Marcel Mutoni of SlamOnline.com got a "good look" inside the Lakers huddle to see what Mike D'Antoni was drawing up:

At least "Bill Walton" had some encouragement to offer forlorn Lakers fans:

And, hey, the Lakers weren't the only unwatchable team on TV on Thursday night, right "Peyton Manning"?

For another quip about the Lakers' woeful defense, we return to Lakers Nation:

Kobe Bryant offers his thoughts (via LMAO TWITPICS):

Kelly Dwyer of Yahoo! Sports has no need for your fancy stats:

The Lakers locker room was full of special visitors after the game. If only they had room on the roster...(via J. Doug Hatings):

Though, Lakers blogger Andrew Ungvari thought that one visit from Reverend Jesse Jackson would be more than enough for this team:

Some guy named Josh Martin thought the Purple and Gold could use a 12-12-12 Concert of their own:

If Twitter had this much to say about the Lakers losing to the team with the best record in the Eastern Conference, Hoopsworld's Alex Kennedy can only imagine what might happen if they fall flat against the Washington Wizards on Friday:
