NBA Trade Rumors: Blazers and Steve Nash Trade Makes No Sense for Either Party

Gabe ZaldivarMay 31, 2018

The Suns continue to live out the same nightmare facing the good people of Orlando, but they need to stay clear of recent rumors involving the Blazers. Portland would be wise to back off as well.

ESPN's Marc Stein reports that talks continue behind the scenes with the Suns and a myriad of teams that remains secret.

It remains the most uninteresting spy story of all time, largely because Phoenix does not seem inclined to jump at any trade for Steve Nash wt the moment.

Stein issues the Suns are listening to far more pitches on their star guard than we would imagine, and the most likely destination would be Portland.

"

"Portland," says one source close to the situation, "has been interested in Nash for a while."

Said another: "Because of his age and because he can leave in the summer, offers for Nash haven't been as star-laden as you'd think."

"

Stein continues with what has to be the only piece that Phoenix should toy with getting in return for one of the best point guards in the game.

"

Yet even if the Blazers were willing to include the widely coveted Nicolas Batum...sources say Phoenix continues to put out the message that it won't deal Nash unless Nash asks to be traded. Which is something Nash has consistently said he won't do.

"

As we have all seen, Nash is a special kind of player and a far more unique personality. While everyone and their Stephen Jacksons' seem to be asking for a trade or more money, Nash continues to play All-Star level ball and maintain silence.

He is far too honorable for this game, and we salute him.

With that being said, this deal makes no sense as Portland continues to maintain that Batum is off limits.

I agree that this is a story similar to the one playing out in Orlando, and the Suns want to get something for a player that may be leaving in the summer, but Nash's departure is not nearly as certain as Howard's. They simply can't take a bunch of spare parts on and call it a success. Unless they are guaranteed a player that can impact the squad like a Batum, then the move is to stand pat.

For the Blazers, there is no doubt that they need help in the backcourt, but renting a player when you sit on the cusp of the playoffs is not the smartest move.

With Nash, the Blazers are still a player away from being a true contender. Unless Nash secures an extension, there is no reason for an 18-16 team sitting in eighth in the West to rent a player, even if that player is Steve Nash.
