NBA Free Agents 2011: Tracy McGrady Doesn't Solve Problems of Atlanta Hawks

Brian MaziqueDec 7, 2011

In anticipation of Jamal Crawford signing, the Atlanta Hawks find a cheaper option in reportedly agreeing to terms with Tracy McGrady on a veteran's minimum contract, as reported by sources close to Stephen A. Smith.

Stephen A. Smith had previously reported that he guaranteed the T-Mac would sign with the Chicago Bulls. Obviously, that hasn't worked out, if this is true.

McGrady would be looked at to supply scoring punch off the bench, very similar to the role Crawford played last season. It is highly doubtful he'd crack the starting lineup as shooting guard or small forward.

The Hawks have routinely failed in postseason situations, despite having a talented core with Joe Johnson, Josh Smith and Al Horford. Now, they sign an aging player in T-Mac with a similar past in his own right.

McGrady has never won a playoff series. This just doesn't seem to be a fruitful signing for either team. It appeared McGrady really wanted to sign with Chicago, but for the second time in as many years, the Bulls may not have been as eager to bring him in.

Either way, I know Hawks fans can't be too ecstatic about this news of a potentially marginal signing. There may be more to come for Atlanta, as of now, the team they have may not be enough to hold off the Pacers and Bucks in the Eastern Conference pecking order.
