Knicks Rumors: Top Center Targets That Are an Ideal Fit for New York

Matt ShetlerNov 30, 2011

With NBA free agency rapidly approaching, what the New York Knicks will do is one of the hot topics around the league.

They desperately need a center that can play defense and rebound, but only willing to shell out one-year contracts this season, signing a guy like a Tyson Chandler is probably unrealistic, so the Knicks may be forced to look at cheaper alternatives.

Here are some guys that could be an ideal fit in New York.

Andris Biedrins

Biedrins could be a victim of the amnesty clause if Golden State should choose to go that route. If so, the Knicks could have interest. However, would Biedrins be willing to accept a one-year deal at or around the veteran minimum and would he even make it through the teams that are under the salary cap which would have the first opportunity to sign him?

Brendan Haywood

Similar situation with Haywood, who could be an amnesty cut with Dallas. Dallas will be looking to re-sign Tyson Chandler, Caron Butler and J.J. Barea so clearing Haywood's number off their cap could be a realistic option.

Samuel Dalembert

Dalembert could be a perfect fit in New York and the Knicks are one of the teams on his wish list, but getting the seven-footer to accept a one-year deal with perhaps the mid-level exemption could be a stretch.

Brown is probably not the guy Knicks fans want to hear about, but he's big and can likely be had cheap. He can play a little defense and rebound. The team can already score, they need a big man that can battle in the middle. There aren't many of those out there so signing Brown and maybe another big might make sense.

Aaron Gray

Gray is a big body and could be a nice big body off the bench. With the club possibly targeting both Brown and Gray, it would make New York bigger and a little bit better on the front line.

Kurt Thomas

Could Thomas make a return to New York? It would be nice and the oldest player in the NBA would make the club much tougher and harder to score on in the paint. Rumor is that Thomas is considering New York, but other teams as well and may be closer to leaning towards a return to Chicago.
