Ramon Sessions and Five Other Current Cavaliers with No Future in Cleveland
It's important as a rebuilding franchise to recognize what players you what to build your team around.
In an injury-plagued year such as 2010-2011, teams like the Cavaliers are forced to play any and every healthy body available, even if they're named Ryan Hollins.
Thanks to the draft and an off-season of healing, the Cavs now have the luxury of not having to throw everybody and the kitchen sink out on the court, and can start to put the right players for the future in place.
These next few players may have a future in the NBA, but due to age, position, or expiring contract, will not have a future with the Cavaliers.
Joey Graham
1 of 6Years Remaining on Contract: One
Why He's Gone: The Joey Graham experiment resulted in a failing grade for the Cavs.ย Desperate to make a move in the late and extremely thin free agent market, Cleveland inked Graham to a two year, $2 million deal.
What they got for their $1 million last season was an astonishingly bad 7.78 player efficiency rating.
Cleveland would be wise not to make the same mistake this season.ย Currently, the Cavs roster stands at 16 players.ย Only allowed to keep 15, expect Graham to be the first one on the chopping block.
Ryan Hollins
2 of 6Years Remaining on Contract: One
Why He's Gone: Hollins is tall.ย That's about the best thing you can say about the guy as a basketball player.
His season can best be summed up the play above.ย Brook Lopez was probably confused as to how a baby dove got into his jersey.
Hollins is in the last year of his contract, and will almost certainly not be re-signed and if not for the lack of size on the current Cavalier roster, would be in danger of being cut right away.
Antawn Jamison
3 of 6Years Remaining on Contract: One
Why He's Gone: Despite turning 35 last month, Jamison is still a very productive scorer at this stage in his career.ย His 18 points per game led the Cavaliers last season and his veteran leadership is an invaluable asset for Cleveland in the development of rookie Tristan Thompson, who shares Jamison's position of power forward.
Jamison's $15 million expiring deal is sure to attract a few buyers at this years trade deadline.ย It makes no sense for Antawn to re-sign after the season, as the Cavs are a few years away from being a major player in the East.
Jamison and the Cavs best option is to deal the veteran at the trade deadline to a contending club looking for a boost or another team looking to shed salary for next season.ย He could still be worth a mid-to-late first round pick or young talent, although not on an elite level.ย
Cleveland should hang on to him until the trade deadline to extend his knowledge to Thompson, then attempt to receive some compensation before he walks this off-season.
Alonzo Gee/Manny Harris
4 of 6Years Remaining on Contracts: One
Why They're Gone: This one should depend on the 2012 NBA draft.ย
Two of the top players the Cavs will most likely target will be Duke's Austin Rivers and North Carolina's Harrison Barnes.ย Rivers plays shooting guard, the same as Harris, while Barnes plays small forward, the same as Gee.
Gee and Harris are both young players that could have a future as a solid role player in the league, however none have a ceiling like Rivers or Barnes.ย Therefore, one or possibly both could lose their job based on position of team need.ย
If Barnes is drafted, expect Gee not to re-sign.ย If Rivers is the guy, say goodbye to Harris.
Ramon Sessions
5 of 6Years Remaining on Contract: Two (Player Option)
Why He's Gone: Sessions was arguably the Cavaliers' best player last season and played beautifully during stretches when given ample playing time.
Then the Baron Davis trade happened, and Sessions saw himself back on the bench with his minutes and production taking a big hit.ย
This was before the Cavaliers drafted Kyrie Irving.
Now with Irving, Sessions, and Davis's big contract, look for Ramon to be the first to go.ย Irving is clearly the future at point guard for Cleveland, so the best role Sessions could fill moving forward would be that of sixth man.ย
At 24 years of age and a breakout season behind him, Sessions probably feels he could do better, and he's absolutely right.
Whether Cleveland decides to trade him or not, Sessions can opt out of his deal after this season and will most certainly not want to return to Cleveland in a backup role.ย
The best thing the Cavs can do is deal Ramon now while his value is high, and wish him the best of luck in his future career.
Baron Davis
6 of 6Years Remaining on Contract: Two (Early Termination Option)
Why He's Gone: Davis was a way to acquire an additional first-round pick.ย Nothing less, nothing more.ย
The Cavaliers kept him in the starting lineup last season to keep Davis happy and keep his trade value somewhere above nothing.
A funny thing happened along the way though, as Davis played very well for the Cavs and led them to a number of late-season wins, including a home victory over the Miami Heat.ย
His passing ability and court vision were an obvious upgrade over anything the Cavs had before, and are qualities he'll hopefully pass on to heir apparent Kyrie Irving.
Davis will likely remain with the Cavs for the entirety of the 2011-2012 season, unless they can find a buyer at the deadline.ย
Look for Cleveland to trade Davis after this season so another team can buy him out to clear cap space, if the Cavs don't do the same themselves.
