Washington Wizards: The NBA's Most Exciting Team

Austin GreenJun 7, 2018

Whenever the next NBA season begins, the league's most exciting team may reside in our nation's capitol.

John Wall and company posses all the ingredients needed to overtake the Clippers as the most athletic, unpredictable, and at times, frustrating team in the league.

Just look at the Wizards roster: An electrifying point guard, trigger happy wingmen, and a pair of enigmatic seven-footers. Add in a swagged out European dude and some sweet new uniforms and you got yourself one entertaining basketball team.

Of course, it will be a bumpy ride. Passing is a foreign concept to half the roster. Most contributing players are too young to legally rent a car. And the lack of fundamentals may cause basketball purists to light themselves on fire.

But dammit, it's going to be fun.

Here are five reasons why you should be watching the Washington Wizards next season.

Jan Vesely and His Euro Swag

1 of 5

I'm assuming that most people knew nothing about Jan Vesely before the 2011 NBA Draft. If I'm correct, then he made one hell of a first impression.

Order of events: David Stern announces Vesely is drafted sixth overall by Washington. Vesely proceeds to passionately kiss his beautiful girlfriend (who looks like a legit 6'10" in heels). Fran Frischilla compliments his taste in women. ESPN shows him repeatedly dunking on other European guys. Then, when Mark Jones asked him how he felt about being called the "European Blake Griffin", Vesely smiled and said "I think Blake Griffin is the American Jan Vesely."

That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you make an entrance into the NBA.

Who would have thought the skinny guy from the Czech Republic was going to make out with his girlfriend, dunk on a bunch of dudes, and say he's coming for Blake Griffin's head?

If Vesely's career is one-tenth as entertaining as his draft night, the world will be a better place.

The NBA's Most Perplexing Frontcourt

2 of 5

The Wizards frontcourt tandem of JaVale McGee and Andray Blatche defines the words potential, upside and immaturity.

When motivated and clear-headed, the duo shows flashes of brilliance. McGee is capable of athletic feats that literally no other human can accomplish, and Blatche is on the verge of becoming a double-double machine.

But until they grow up and understand the concept of team basketball, they will just be two more talented guys who never panned out.

The 24-year-old Blatche averaged 17 points and 8 rebounds per game last season, but those numbers are somewhat hollow. A deeper look at the stats shows that he was bleeding inefficiency all over the court.

He attempted four shots per game from 16-23 feet away, despite the fact that he only hit 32 percent of them. Even more odd, he somehow managed to shoot just 25 percent from three to nine feet away from the basket, a horrible number for a man his size.

As for McGee, let's just say basketball IQ isn't exactly his strength. He was heavily criticized for his antics when he recorded his first triple-double, which Kevin McHale called "terrible" and a "bad triple-double" during the NBA TV broadcast.

With McGee and Blatche, the talent is there. The maturity, not so much. Either way it will be fascinating to see how they progress next season.

Jordan Crawford Can Fill It Up

3 of 5

Before entering the NBA, Jordan Crawford was known as the college kid who dunked on LeBron James at his own skills camp.

Now, he's making a name for himself as one of the top young scorers in the league. The 6'4" rookie was buried on the bench in Atlanta, but blossomed after being traded to Washington in February.

In 26 games with the Wizards—18 of which he started—Crawford averaged 16.3 points in 33 minutes per game.Ā

He haunted LeBron again, dropping 39 points on the Miami Heat in March. Two days later, with John Wall out, Crawford recorded his first career triple double.

These performances also came in the absence of fellow 2-guard Nick Young, who was out with a knee injury. It's unclear how Flip Saunders will balance minutes between the two, but I would expect Crawford to come off the bench the majority of the time.

Crawford is a great young talent and could be one of the NBA's best scorers in the near future. Just don't expect him to pass the ball.

Same with Nick Young

4 of 5

Nick Young can do three things on a basketball court: score, score and score.

It's all he's capable of—or more accurately, interested in—but he does it pretty damn well. He scores in every conceivable way, Exhibit A being that filthy 360 layup.Ā

He has always shown that he could put up points, but struggled to see much action during his first three seasons.

Last year, Flip Saunders awarded him starters' minutes and Young didn't disappoint. He was the Wizards leading scorer, averaging 17 points on 44 percent shooting.

He had numerous scoring explosions, including 38 against Miami and a career high 43 against theĀ  Sacramento Kings.

Unfortunately, he suffered a knee injury in March and missed 16 of the Wizards final 22 games. But next season he will be fully recovered and a year wiser.

Great scorers learn new tricks every summer. I expect Young to return with an even bigger arsenal of offensive moves.

John Wall Is a Beast

5 of 5

If you didn't just watch that entire four minute video, shame on you. That is the sickest high school highlight reel ever, hands down.

Wall has been spectacular in the NBA as well, ever since he Dougie'd his way into the league back in November. In just his sixth career game, he became the third-youngest player to ever record a triple double.

Wall finished the season with averages of 16 points and 8 assists per game. He was also named MVP of the Rookie-Sophomore game, and finished second in Rookie of the Year voting, behind the aforementioned Griffin.

In a league that is becoming increasingly dominated by point guards, Wall has the ability to be the best. He has world class athleticism and the hunger and work ethic of a kid hell-bent on achieving greatness. I expect him to be an All-Star next season and an MVP in the future.

There are few certainties in today's NBA, but I am sure of several things: Crawford and Young will pour in points from the outside. McGee and Blatche will do countless things (both good and bad) that will leave you in disbelief. Jan Vesely will do cool European guy things. John Wall will be phenomenal.

And the Washington Wizards will be the most exciting team in basketball next season.
