Cleveland Cavaliers: Possible Destinations for Cavs Players on the Block
The Cleveland Cavaliers are a team in flux, and with the NBA embroiled in a lockout there is very little they can do to go from being a team with an uncertain plan for the coming year to being a team with some sort of idea of what they are going to do.
They are extraordinarily deep at point guard and power forward, and it's likely that they will end up trading multiple people throughout this season.
Of the players that could be on the move, Ramon Sessions is the most likely, followed by Anderson Varejao, Antawn Jamison and possibly Baron Davis and Daniel Gibson.
The Cavaliers are looking to get young players and draft picks in return for the roster that they will easily be willing to tear apart.
But where are they going to end up? There are many teams out there who are on the lookout for talented players, which many of the Cavaliers are individually.
Ramon Sessions
1 of 6Ramon Sessions is probably the most sought after player on the Cleveland Cavaliers that is also on the trading block.
Sessions had a breakout season last year, proving that he could be a legitimate starter in the NBA and that he can be both a good passer and a great penetrating scorer.
The only question is if he put up the numbers he did because he was on such a bad team or if they were legitimate numbers.
A few teams out there looking for a point guard include the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, Miami Heat and possibly the Dallas Mavericks if they end up letting JJ Barea walk in free agency.
Cleveland will likely be looking for a first rounder out of Sessions, which rules out the Knicks, who don't have one to give until 2018 and Miami, who are without a pick to give until 2017.
That leaves Los Angeles and Dallas, both of whom own all of their draft picks.
When it comes down to it, I think the Lakers would be best served to get Sessions, as Derek Fisher is starting to get over the hill and they will probably be looking for ways to improve their team with little to no impact to their current roster, and trading a draft pick for Sessions just may be the thing to do.
Omri Casspi
2 of 6They may have just traded for him, but the Cavs were contacted before the lockout by both the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs.
The Cavaliers must have been pretty high on Casspi if they were open enough to give up JJ Hickson, a player that they were unwilling to include in a trade just over a year ago for Amar'e Stoudemire.
However, there is a possibility that he could end up with the San Antonio Spurs if they are as high on Casspi as the Cavs are, as they tend to get what they want in situations like this.
Antawn Jamison
3 of 6Antawn Jamison is a defensive liability at best, but on the offensive end he can be quite a good player if he both tries hard and is in the right situation.
Jamsion is both in the wrong situation and not trying hard at this point with the Cavaliers, but given his huge expiring contract and his ability to play from the wing and score in unique ways.
If there is a playoff bound team out there in need of a swingman who can hit the three and stretch the defense at the same time then Jamison is their man.
The Cavs could also flip him to a team trying to free up some cap space by getting rid of a large contract.
In all likelihood a team would have to give them a large offer for Jamison's expiring contract, as cap space could be one of the most desirable things for a team if the new collective bargaining agreement includes a hard salary cap.
Baron Davis
4 of 6Baron Davis is one of the most interesting players on the Cavaliers right now.
The conditions are perfect for Davis to come back to the Cavs in a few months (or whenever the lockout ends) fatter than Eddy Curry ever was with the Knicks. He doesn't have any commitments to speak of and he is on the downside of his career.
However, in the past season with the Clippers and Cavaliers, Davis actually looked liked he was both having fun playing basketball again and caring for the team he is playing for.
If Davis keeps playing like he did at the end of last season then some teams could end up making a play for him, but in all likelihood Davis is going to be a Cavalier for at least another year and end up getting some looks next season for his large expiring contract.
Boobie Gibson
5 of 6Of the players that seem to have the possibility of moving, Daniel Gibson is probably the least likely of them all, as the Cavaliers seem to be dedicated to having him for the long haul.
Gibson has shown that he can play in the big moment, having monster games as a rookie in the Cavaliers run to the Finals in 2007, he just never became a consistent enough player to be given the starting spot.
Boobie could end up on the block getting looks from a team looking to bolster their scoring options from the guard position, and with just a few legitimate scorers out there that are available, Boobie could bring a nice return for the Cavs.
The Chicago Bulls could end up grabbing him as a back-up point guard along with the Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks or Dallas Mavericks. However, it seems that he is a Cavalier until further notice.
Anderson Varejao
6 of 6If not for the injury that he suffered to end his season last year, Anderson Varejao could already be on a different team right now, as the Oklahoma City Thunder had a legitimate desire for the Wild Thing. However, they picked up Kendrick Perkins which basically filled the hole they would have liked to fill with Varejao.
There are still plenty of teams out there who are looking for a high-energy player like Varejao, who is one of the best energy men in the NBA. He can instantly come on the floor and switch the momentum of a single game with just an offensive rebound or a hustle play.
Teams that would both be interested and have the assets to trade for him include the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, or Boston, Atlanta or Portland who are near the bottom of the pack in rebounding.
In the end, I think teams will be nervous about biting on him too early, especially after getting injured last season, and will likely pass on him until next season.
