NBA Trade Speculation: 5 Deals to Get Tony Parker off of San Antonio Spurs
With 12:01 AM coming and going, with no CBA agreement, the last thing on the minds of players, fans, owners, coaches, and spectators are trades. However, I am setting up shop and getting ready for a long NBA-less few months.ย
The 2011-2012 NBA season, at this point, looks lost and without hope. However, it is always fun for the fan (i.e. me) to think about different trades and things of that nature as if the new season was right around the corner.ย
At the time of the NBA Draft, their were countless rumors of players being traded for picks, moving up spots, a lot of which never came to fruition. Tony Parker was seen as a piece that could be on the move, but again nothing ever came of it. Many people feel Tony Parker is getting set to retire, that is what being in the league since you were 19 will do to you, when in reality he is far from retirement. Let's see where he might go based on my imagination.ย
Now the following slides are not rumored by teams, but instead they are fun scenarios of which some would agree or disagree with, causing a stir for debate. Again, all these scenarios are as if their is no lockout and we are in a normal offseason.
Los Angeles Lakers
1 of 5Lets think about this scenario. The Lakers need a new point guard, and the Spurs need a successor for an aging Tim Duncan.
Enter, Tony Parker and Pau Gasol. Gasol was rumored to be trade bait to the Minnesota Timberwolves (how true that was I am not too sure). A deal straight up would be unlikely, but if you were to thrown in a Steve Blake or possibly a Shannon Brown, pending how much they feel a connection with him, then I think you have a deal.ย
Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum are still a top duo in the paint and Kobe Bryant has an upbeat superstar point guard.ย
Now i know the Spurs got rid of George Hill, but that would be the addition of Blake or Brown in the trade. If I am L.A. I am very happy, and if I am San Antonio I am happy with Pau, as long as he doesn't fold in the playoffs, again.
You could very easily substitute Pau for Odom in this trade.
Denver Nuggets
2 of 5Here is an interesting team that does not have a single go-to guy, but they have a nice team. Now I know Nuggets head coach George Karl doesn't like high profile stars, but Parker is different. He is a very under the radar type of superstar. Not incredibly flashy, but gets the job done.ย
The Nuggets would have to deal a J.R. Smith, Wilson Chandler, and maybe a Danilo Gallinari or draft picks for Tony Parker.
I know the Nuggets just signed Andre Miller for the point, but he would be a nice backup and Ty Lawson could move to the two spot. Parker would be a nice leader on the team and could be a nice decision maker down the stretch, a veteran to keep the tempo at appropriate levels during games.ย
I could see a move like this, especially with the addition of Kenneth Faried and Jordan Hamilton in the draft by the Nuggets.ย
Utah Jazz
3 of 5Here is another team that I could see in need of a savvy, star powered point guard. Deron Williams is long gone. The drafting of Alec Burks is a nice addition, but I do not feel he is ready to lead a team on a night by night basis.ย
The deal would have to be Tony Parker for Derrick Favors, Devin Harris, and Mehmet Okur. The Spurs get two nice forwards, Okur who can double as a center, and a veteran point guard. Maybe the Jazz give up Millsap as the third player instead of Okur, but that is up for debate.ย
Jazz would give up a bit, but with Miles, Parker, Burks, Kanter, and whoever you put at the no. 4 spot, that is a young above average team.
Atlanta Hawks
4 of 5This one may be the most debated one. Tony Parker for Jamal Crawford and Josh Smith.
Now the Spurs would not only get a point guard replacement, but a solid power forward in Smith. The Hawks may not be the happiest with this deal, but if the Spurs were to throw in Richard Jefferson and a couple future draft picks.ย
THe Spurs get younger and the Hawks now have Joe Johnson, Tony Parker, Al Horford, Kirk Hinrich, Kawhi Leonard, Davis Bertans, along with others. I think the Hawks would win and the Spurs would get a couple proven stars.ย
Memphis Grizzlies
5 of 5Tony Parker, ย Richard Jefferson, DeJuan Blair, and two future draft picks for O.J. Mayo, Rudy Gay and Marc Gasol.
Okay, I know I went blockbuster on this one. Again, this is the fun part of it. The oft-injured Rudy Gay gets a fresh start with San Antonio, and "Z-Bo" gets someone who can take all the pressure off of him. Mayo gets to lead the Spurs and the Blair-Gasol switch is a pretty even trade, in my opinion.ย
This one may be way out there, but hey it is fun to think about. Especially since there will be no trading for quite a long time.ย
I would love to hear what other teams he could be shipped to and what the Spurs would get in return. Let me hear 'em.
