The Philadelphia 76ers have made a tremendous rebound this year and they have displayed a great team effort to do so, led by head coach Doug Collins.
One player who has done a great job this year coming off the bench has been forward Thaddeus Young.
The Sixers one of the deepest benches in the league and it plays a vital part in each-and-every game. Young is averaging 12.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, clearly showing he is a valuable part of the team.
Young has grown and developed into a much more mature player than he was in his first couple years with the team.
But unfortunately, the game is a business and teams are forced to make decisions at the end of every season when it comes to roster moves.
Young falls in this situation at the end of this season, since his contract expires. Some fans want to keep him, and others believe that they should let him walk in free agency.
I take the side of keeping Young because he is young and he is a great player to have come off the bench.
There have been numerous times this season when Young has led the team to victory. Occasionally, he will have those types of games where he scores 20-plus points and gets around seven rebounds. It makes the lineup much more versatile.
What should the Sixers do with Thad?
Young is an all-around player who can play the small forward and the power forward slots. Sometimes he has problems finishing, but that quality is portrayed incorrectly by most fans because he is actually one of the better ones on the team.
Since he plays two positions, he is very expendable to place in the lineup. Collins is known for mixing up the lineup a lot this year and having Young makes it easier to work with.
Over the years, Young has developed a lot of chemistry with the young lineup and he is flourishing in the system that Collins is providing (then again, who isn't?).
If he demands a ton of money, then maybe we shouldn't re-sign him, but I highly doubt if he will do so. One of the first things on the to-do list for the Sixers' front office at the end of the season should be to re-sign Thaddeus Young.
