Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Russell Westbrook.
Unless you have been living in a cave for the last four years, I am sure you have seen at least one of Westbrook’s rim-shaking dunks.
From his days at UCLA, Westbrook has always been an incredible athlete. He had the posterizing dunk against Indiana in the NCAA tournament, then he had one against Cal and one against Oregon. He had countless others, but those three stand out among his time with the Bruins.
Many people thought that the Oklahoma City Thunder (Seattle SuperSonics at the time) were crazy for picking a guy who played the shooting guard position and had a career-high average of just over 12 points per game with the fourth pick in the draft.
However, Westbrook has shown that he was worth the risk that high in the draft.
The former Bruin is one of the best defensive guards in the league right now. His speed and strength allow him to stay in front of any point guard or even move over to guard the off guard.
It’s incredible to me that more people didn’t see what UCLA saw in Westbrook. The lightly recruited guard picked the Bruins over the likes of Arizona State and the University of San Diego. Arizona State was not yet a contender in the Pac-10 and San Diego was a mediocre mid-major.
I am happy to see others finally give one of my favorite players the props he deserves, but honestly what is it going to take to get him in the dunk contest?
