Magic-Suns Trade: Vince Carter Trade to Suns Impact; Gilbert Arenas Trade Rumors

Mihir BhagatDec 18, 2010

The Orlando Magic have executed a six-player trade with the Phoenix Suns that would bring in Hedo Turkoglu, Jason Richardson and Earl Clark in exchange for Vince Carter, Marcin Gortat, Mickael Pietrus, a 2011 first-round pick and cash consideration. While the trade hasn't been officially finalized, the two sides have agreed in principle according to league sources.

This move, in my opinion, is fair for both teams as it would immediately strengthen the Magic's chances of winning now while providing the Suns with building blocks for the future.

Turkoglu is a former Magic star and was an integral key to their run at the Finals in 2009. Moreover, Richardson has been red hot yet streaky this season averaging 19.3 points per game.

On the flip side, Vince Carter's contract expires at the end of this season which would provide them the cap room flexibility to play a factor in the upcoming free agent class. Meanwhile, Marcin Gortat is a solid center through whom they can build their frontcourt around. When given the opportunity, he's capitalized and performed at a respectable level. In addition, the draft selections and cash are also attractive pieces.

This deal came primarily as a result of the Magic flipping on the panic switch after losing five of their past six games. They are currently 4th in the Eastern Conference, yet needed to do something significant in order to keep up with the surging Boston Celtics and Miami Heat.

While this already gives their roster a big-time turnaround, I wouldn't be surprised if more moves are made in the near future.

In other news, the Magic are also trying to acquire Gilbert Arenas from the Washington Wizards. Rumors are indicating that Rashard Lewis would be the player whom they would deal in return. Team president Otis Smith said that the aggressiveness of talks was "eight out of 10."

As to if and when that deal gets done is yet to be determined, but be sure to keep a close eye out in the coming days.
