NBA Fan Rails Against Sports Stupidity Like The WWE's Edge
Stupidity and sports seem to go hand in hand, especially on this site.
Where in the constitution does it say that sports fans have to be the most idiotic, provincial, dimwitted jerks in the world?
What is it about sports that causes people to send anonymous death threats to a bleacher report writer they don't know and have never met, just because they were happy over something?
Is the problem in the sports leagues themselves?
Is it ESPN's fault?
Is it because of the players?
See, most fans will put all the blame on this, but I'm going to blame something that never gets any blame, never seems to get the responsibility for anything that happens in this world.
I'm blaming the people, meaning you, me, and everyone else.
Now I know liberals will paint this as evil, after all according to liberals, its never a person's fault if they do something wrong. Psycho kid shoots up the school? Blame the video games, what kind of music was the kid listening to, what were his favorite movies?
Never do you hear, "hey maybe these kids were just screwed up in the head by screwed up parents who's answer is to blame video games, music and movies whenever their child does something wrong."
No, never, you don't ever want to blame the parents for anything, even though it is their job to make sure their child is raised right with morals and values. Please spare me the whole "It takes a village" crap! There are countless stories of many kids who grew up in some of the worst conditions imaginable, however they overcame it to become great people, productive citizens who ended up giving back to the world. Funny how no one asks what video games they played, what music they listened to, or their favorite music. I bet you anything its no different from the psycho kid that shoots up the school.
But even worse is as adults, we the people don't get blamed for when we do something wrong, there's no accountability.
And the internet, where you can post crap anonymously, only makes it worse.
The worst Bleacher Report trolls are the ones that do not write any articles, do not post a picture, and try to use clever nicknames. They spend their time reading articles about people who they claim to despise, then go on to attack the author of the article for not agreeing with their viewpoint. In a case I had, I actually had death threats over an article I wrote a day after the decision.
What does this have to do with accountability? On the internet, there is none, you could do whatever you want however you want, how are you going to get punished? And who got the blame for all those death threats you may ask?
LeBron James. After all had he not left Cleveland, not a single death threat lands in my e-mail inbox (that's why I don't post my e-mail address after every article anymore. Look in my archives, I used to do it all the time.)
After all, its not these people's fault that they based their lives solely on a 25 year old basketball player who exercised his right in what's supposed to be a "free-market" economy and went to a place that he felt gave him the best opportunity to win. NO, its LeBron's fault for making them fall in love with his play and get attached.
This lack of civility has to end. So does the stupidity. Can anyone please write something of value on this site? I don't care if we disagree. Take for instance Bailey Brautigan. I tend to disagree with a lot of what she writes about LeBron. However she does it in an intelligent way making valid points and using logic and facts she gathers from her research. She also expresses herself in a respectful manner and knows how to deal with trolls. I doubt she'll read this but Bailey, I wish I could handle these B/R trolls as well as you do.
But I don't know how to, therefore I'm lashing out against them. I think its only fair, if they have the right to lash out on my articles against me for doing nothing more than writing articles that involve research and facts, then I have the right to lash out against these losers for spouting their internet diarrhea all over the place and making all sports fans look like complete morons!
I've already written not one, not two, but three articles where I took an intelligent approach hoping to provoke an intelligent conversation about this. However just by looking at the comments I'm sure you can see that that didn't last very long, sometimes I wonder if anyone actually read the piece or if they just went to it because of the picture of LeBron waiting to say what they were going to say about him either for or against. The last one I even used participation from other writers to help me out. Same thing.
Our problem is with chosen ignorance and stupidity. Its not just in sports but everywhere in this world. No one wants to open up their minds and look at things from the other perspective.
Sometimes I think that they don't do this because they know that if they do, they find the talking points that they cling to disappears. Better to be stupid while looking smart as opposed to being smart and being proven wrong.
I only ask for people to think, is that so hard? Apparently yes. Its the same things that comedian Bill Hicks encouraged. However because of this, he was virtually obscure in the United States, his home country, while comedians who were nowhere near his level of intellect or humor were more widely praised. (Case in point: 1994, the year he passed away. That year he was up for comedian of the year, but lost out to Carrot Top, a comedian who's the antithesis of thinking, for he just opens up his suitcase and breaks out props. Sadly while had Hicks been alive today he would've evolved, Carrot top's shtick is the same that it was in 94. Second case: Denis Leary, who took a lot of his material from Hicks. However he presented it as a character, where as with Hicks it was what he thought and what he felt.)
Will people ever just stop to think? Of course not. I've been asking for it, and we were given to tools to do it (its called a brain) but we don't.
Me? The death threats forced me to think. I'll admit, it sucks to be a Cleveland sports fan, and I'll admit, maybe LeBron could've gone about things differently. I've thought about how I'd feel, how I'd react, and I sure as hell know one thing: I'm not going to troll on message boards and websites, nor am I going to waste my time on someone I despise. Its done, he's gone, time to move on. In fact if I were a Cleveland Sports fan, I'd instead be wondering when they're going to give Colt McCoy a chance under center and looking forward to December 2nd in order to boo LeBron. (Booing is always ok if you are displeased with your teams result.)
I know the feeling of disappointment, I'm a true sports fan. I saw Marino retire without a ring, I saw Allan Houston somehow make that shot to eliminate the Heat, followed by Jamal Mashburn passing up the winning shot to Clarence Weatherspoon who went on to miss it because he's not known for his shooting. I saw Stan Van Gundy mismanage an Eastern Conference Finals game 7 at home, Culpepper over Brees, the Wannstedt-era, the Cameron-era, and Nick Saban say flat out that he wasn't going to coach Alabama then go on to coach Alabama.
I saw a pass interference penalty that wasn't cost my college football team a National title, I saw how the BCS is really BS when FSU got the call over The U in 2000 to play in the National Title game despite The Canes beating the Noles that season, before that I saw a canes team go into New Orleans thinking they already won, then proceeded to get mollywopped by the Crimson Tide.
I can go on forever, like Norv Turner's decision to pass the ball with less than two minutes left in New England when he had the league's leading rusher and the Patriots were out of time outs, I went to bed before the Jets commenced with their "Monday Night Miracle" against the Dolphins (I had school early the next day.) Then there's my baseball team, the Cubs, which has been disappointing me constantly since I was one.
But lets get to that. I'm a Cubs fan, as is my father. The rest of our family are Marlins fans. I hate the Marlins as a team, and I hate their bandwagon fans. However I'm intelligent enough to know that not all of them are bandwagon fans. See, here's another thing sports fans never think about: they'll call anyone a bandwagon fan, but technically, what team doesn't have a bandwagon?
The term "bandwagoner" is actually an insult to intelligence. Is this ever said by people who live in said city? Of course not! Then again everyone has their own misconceptions of places they've never been to, and with Miami its a stigma that's hard to shake when you consider that every TV show and movie from here perpetuated a stereotype (Miami Vice, Scarface=Miami has a lot of crime, Golden Girls=Miami is a place where people go to wait to die.)
I pointed this out in one of my articles, and what ends up happening? People expressed the same misconceptions!
I wish we lived in a world where everyone thought before they spoke, thought before they posted, thought before we acted. But we don't, and that's deemed socially acceptable.
Because in the end, its never your fault, nothing is. In fact, go ahead and be violent. In the end Jack Thompson will come around and blame it on the video games you play, while Tipper Gore will say its because of the music you listen to, then some gasbag will make some obscure connection between your actions and a recent movie that you saw. Remember, in 2010 in America, its never your fault, you are not held responsible for anything that you do or anything that happens to you.
And when blaming video games, movies, TV shows or anything else fails, just blame LeBron, after all, it worked for Dan Gilbert.
But as long as stupid statements are made, I'll be there to call you out on it. I come armed with stats, logic, reasoning and rationality to prove you wrong. Much like WWE Superstar Edge, I'm beginning my crusade against stupidity and ignorance and will try to encourage people to think. However, I won't be doing this by trolling on sites of teams I hate, because if I hate a team, I have no reason to visit the site.
Something tells me that this will be a life long battle.
Disagree? Agree? Leave a comment, but be warned, stupid comments will be called out on. However thoughtful and intelligent comments will automatically get a like from me, even if I disagree with what you say.
