NBA: Denver's J.R. Smith Being Investigated on Charges of Assault

J.R. Smith continues to prove himself a thug.

Time after time, Smith is found in trouble with the law, but this time Smith could find himself behind bars for the second time in his career.

Denver Police have re-opened an assault investigation of J.R. Smith after he allegedly choked a non-NBA player during a pick-up game at the Pepsi Center in early August. The main reason the Denver Police are re-opening the investigation is because there have been witnesses that have come fourth on the matter.

I said earlier that this could result in some jail time for Smith because this is not his first encounter with the law.

In early 2007, J.R. Smith was found guilty of reckless driving, an incident in which one of Smith's friends was killed.

Smith spent a month in jail for that conviction.

Before becoming a Denver Nugget, Smith spent two years with the New Orleans Hornets. The organization quickly realized that Smith lacked the work ethic and attitude needed to succeed in the NBA and was eventually traded.

J.R. has found success with the Denver Nuggets, averaging 15.4 points and 1.3 steals a game last season on 41 percent shooting.

But his attitude and trouble with the law could very well end his tenure with the Denver Nuggets, forcing himself out of a good situation only because he is unwilling to drop his thug mentality.

Actually, his exit was being constructed before allegations of Assault became public.

The Denver Nuggets have been shopping Smith on the open market since the beginning of the off-season, and again, Smith's attitude and work ethic, combined with his troubled past, have interfered with the teams ability to send him elsewhere.

Really, this comes down to how desperate the Nuggets are to trade Smith. His expiring contract is very valuable on the open market, but his baggage has deterred many General managers from pulling the trigger.

“You know what he can bring to your team, if you were dealing just with talent and ability and all of that. But it’s the stuff that you don’t know that scares you off. He’s a tough guy to have to trade.” A Western Conference General Manager stated.

He can quickly become a cancer within your organization.

Smith may be a scoring threat, one that can explode into a fit of scoring at any point. But smith can also implode your team and that is a risk many General Managers are not willing to take.

If J.R. Smith is convicted of Assault, the Denver Nuggets will ramp up their operations to get the troubled scoring threat out of Denver.

That is, if anyone is willing to take him.
