David Haye Bringing Sexy Back to the Heavyweight Division
David “Hayemaker” Haye 23 (21)-1, the newly-crowned WBA heavyweight champion of the world, is bringing sexy back to the heavyweight division.
For the last decade the heavyweight division has been going through a worse recession than the recent current American economy. With the lack of true stars, action, excitement, in what was once the most prestigious division in the history of the sport for generations, many casual fans have turned their back on the sport of boxing.
At one time the heavyweight champion was the most famous athlete celebrity in the world. More famous than Derek Jeter, Kobe Bryant, and Tom Brady combined as in Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, and Mike Tyson’s reign.
Obviously, times have changed drastically as the average person would not even be able to name who is the current heavyweight champion right now. Plus, you add the fact that there are more championship title belts than Tiger Woods has “friends with benefits.”
The most prestigious main title belts—the WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF and the Ring Magazine title—are about four too many belts to keep track of.
It would be much more simple if boxing had one unified champion who fought and defeated all the other title holders to be the one and only unified heavyweight champion of the world but there are many factors preventing that and two major reasons is the fact that two dominating brothers (Klitschkos) hold the majority of the other belts and they vowed to never fight each other.
Let's keep it real, it has always been about the American heavyweights keeping the division and sport breathing. So when you take a look at the top American heavyweight roster, you do not find anyone who inspires you or who you’ll see on the box of cereal anytime soon. In fact, you see a bunch of overweight reality show-looking contestants who look like they should be cleaning the rings that they are fighting in.
Then comes David Haye, the former unified (WBA, WBC, WBO, and the Ring magazine) cruiserweight champion who recently defeated the 7-foot giant Nikolay Valuev back in November to become the WBA heavyweight champion of the world.
Haye defeated Valuev in Germany, where he is loved and protected. To put this win in perspective, to defeat Valuev in Germany is like to upstage David Hasslehoff in Germany—it will not happen unless you are just truly sensational.
Haye is all the things that the current heavyweight division lacks. He is constantly in tremendous shape, he’s exciting, he has speed, power, ring generalship, integrity, hunger, charisma, movie star good looks, swagger, and charm.
He knows how to hype up a fight when he even wears shirts with him holding the head of his decapitated opponents. As seen in the article photo Haye looks like a cross between Shemar Moore and Ginuwine. He has what it takes to get the ladies excited to watch boxing once again just as many ladies began to watch a young properly PR packaged Oscar De La Hoya fight.
He’s been known to walk into the ring with an amazingly hot female entourage of model-looking ladies who are all 10s. Not the usual last minute hired strippers who work the 11 am shift at Hippos. Haye is also British so he has a cool accent as well to wow the ladies unlike the last great British heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis who sounded more like Jeffery the Butler from Fresh Prince of Bel Air .
Which brings us to this Saturday where Haye will be making his first title defense against the notoriously boring John Ruiz 44(30)-8-1-1. Ruiz is so boring that Puerto Ricans either forget or pretend that he is not Puerto Rican. If Haye finally puts an end to Ruiz’s repeatedly agonizing title shots he will be doing a great service to all of us fight fans.
The fight takes place at the world famous M.E.N. Arena in Manchester, Lancashire United Kingdom and can be seen on SKY Box Office. Which, for us ignorant Americans, is basically like HBO PPV but in the UK.
Haye has been achieving major buzz and hype and has been already viewed as the one to replace Ricky Hatton as the next SKY Box Office poster boy and stadium sell-out star.
A possible analogy can be made for David Haye to be viewed much like the hottest rapper right now, Canadian “Drizzy” Drake.
Just as boxing is in desperate need to find the next big superstar to save it, so is hip hop in much need for someone like Drake to get everyone excited about the rap game once again. And just like Haye, he too is a good looking prettyboy who’s winning over the fellas, the ladies, and haters.
As a huge fan of both boxing and hip hop lets hope both David Haye and Drake can live up to the hype that they so rightfully earned and have been pressured to become saviors of.
“I’m next to blow, pause, and I can hear the critics talking over the applause.” -Drake
