Thanks, Dave Stern! KC Loves You!

Jonathon LoughridgeJul 3, 2008

As of yesterday, the Seattle Supersonics were no more. They officially got out of their Key Arena lease andĀ will move to Oklahoma City.

And it's all thanks to David Stern.

That's why Kansas City would like to thank Dave for all he's done. Now, Kansas City will be the next new home for an NBA franchise. Thanks, Dave!

Actually, KC is the logical choice for next host. The new arena, the Sprint Center, is ready for an NBA team right now. All Dave has to do is get a team here.

Besides the Sprint Center, there are several other factors in why Kansas City is the best choice for a relocating NBA franchise. The Kansas City Power and Light District is nearby, and lures people to it.

People can then walk directly to the Sprint Center and go to the game. Bars will be good for the new team because they will give it exposure. Kansas City also has a strong basketball tradition (KU, anyone?). Pro sports are also heralded in KC.

The two combined would make for something the fans can latch onto. Did I mention bars yet?

The casual fan would look at the NBA right now and say, "There's no need for the NBA to expand, and all the teams look pretty happy where they are right now."

Think again, my bandwagon jumpers.

In the next five years, several teams may look to jump ship and start over in a new city. A surprise name that could come up: The Los Angeles Clippers.

Think about it. The poor Clips have made the playoffs exactly once in the last 10 years and only four times in the team's tenure in LA. They don't even play in their own arena!

They have to share (which actually means get profit raped) with the Los Angeles Lakers, the big brother in town, not far removed from a three-peat in the NBA finals and just getting beat in the most recent installment of the Celtics-Lakers rivalry.

The Clips have no fan base in Los Angeles, with most people in the city pulling for the hometown Lakers.

And don't forget about Elton Brand. Trying to make a name for yourself in a city with Kobe Bryant playing for the other team is hard enough. Brand needs a new place to play.

A place where he can become a superstar because he isn't in the same city as the best player in the Western Conference. The organization should at least honor his commitment and get him to stardom somewhere else.

That's where KC comes into the picture. KC's infrastructure, possible fan base, and any of the other reasons aforementioned (or any others you can think of) make it a perfect match for the Clips.

For starters, they can move to a different division, where they wouldn't have to compete with the Suns (gasp), Lakers (double gasp), Trailblazers (triple gasp), or Jazz (just shoot me). They could play the easier schedule of the Hornets, Mavericks, Rockets, Timberwolves, Grizzlies, and whoever the Sonics become.

This alone could lure any team wanting to get off the West Coast to move. Also, they could have their own fan base and arena. They wouldn't have to share anymore with big brother. They could finally make it. Oh, and don't forget about Brand and Baron Davis.

Assuming Brand re-signs, they would become instant celebrities. Clippers basketball would fly through the airwaves of 610 (home of those Jayhawks) and 810 (largest sports station in the Midwest, even reaching to the Dakotas).

Revenue would be all theirs. And it would benefit downtown Kansas City as well. The neighborhoods would get cleaned up, crime would drop, and revenue would be up do to a consistent ticket in the Sprint Center.

Mismanagement is the only thing preventing the move. Clips management may pass up the opportunity that has presented itself now to another team that will benefit tenfold, like Memphis.

Then Kansas City will be stuck in the rut of losing basketball for many years. But if the Clips happen to decide to move, then David Stern must approve.

Of course, ol' Dave will approve the move. More profit forĀ the NBA and all. That's what executives are worried about. They don't care about fans.Ā  They just want money.

But, greed could be beneficial for KC this time around.

Which brings me back to my original point. Thanks for starting the moving trend, Dave. You've helped many owners realize that the most important thing is to get money from people by moving around to get it. Kansas City thanks you greatly!
