Elena Delle Donne Calls Out Lonzo Ball for Choosing Big Baller Shoes over Nike

Tim DanielsJul 7, 2017

WNBA superstar Elena Delle Donne took a shot at Los Angeles Lakers rookie point guard Lonzo Ball for wearing his personalized Big Baller Brand shoes rather than Nike during his Las Vegas Summer League debut Friday night.

Legion Hoops showed Ball in his signature shoes:

Delle Donne, a Nike endorser, posted the message on social media while the Lakers took on the Los Angeles Clippers:

Ball has generated more attention than any of his fellow rookies in large part due to the presence of LaVar Ball, his outspoken father. While the Ball family patriarch's approach doesn't sit well with everybody, he's not shying away from betting on himself and his three sons.

On Thursday, LaVar wrote an article for Slam Online about why he created Big Baller Brand for Lonzo, LiAngelo and LaMelo rather than urging them to sign with Nike or another top company.

"Big Baller Brand wants to show the next generation that there's a difference between building wealth and just being rich," he explained. "This isn't about getting that early money—just another athlete signing a regular endorsement deal. That would have been the easier route. But we've embarked on a mission. We want to go beyond just inspiring athletes. It's about those small business owners that stay up at night plotting their next move and figuring out how to stay afloat."

When there was internet outrage back in May after announcing Lonzo's debut shoe would cost $495, the eldest Ball posted a simple reply on social media:

Ultimately, Delle Donne probably won't be the last athlete to tease Ball for wearing the BBB on the side of his shoe instead of the Nike swoosh. His NBA opponents will likely constantly use it to fuel trash talk throughout his rookie year.

If the past six months are any indication, however, Ball will keep playing and let his dad do all the talking.
