Gregg Popovich on Tim Duncan Practicing with Spurs: 'He Can't Play Dead Anymore'

Andrew GouldMay 20, 2017

Down 2-0 in the Western Conference Finals, Gregg Popovich has not lost his sense of humor.

Before Saturday's pivotal Game 3 against the Golden State Warriors at AT&T Center, the San Antonio Spurs head coach welcomed retired legend Tim Duncan to practice.

The San Antonio Express-News' Jabari Young filmed him on the court:

The Spurs, especially after announcing that 2016-17 MVP award finalist Kawhi Leonard will miss the upcoming game, need all the help they can muster.

Some fans might implore The Big Fundamental to suit up following Game 2's 136-100 loss Tuesday, and when asked about Duncan's presence, Popovich said his former big man couldn't help turn the series around.

"Tim can't help us a lick. He can't play dead anymore," he said, per Melissa Rohlin of the Express-News. "He just comes for the free lunch."

Duncan, never the most loquacious player during his decorated career, also had some fun. As captured by KSAT 12's RJ Marquez, he pretended to approach the media to talk before revealing his true plan.

Don't be fooled by their quiet nature in comparison to other teams featuring larger-than-life personalities. Despite popular beliefs, the Spurs have never been boring.
