Damian Lillard Breaks Franchise Record for Points in Single Month
Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard's 28 points during Wednesday's 131-109 victory over the Indiana Pacers gave him the franchise record for a single month, per Elias Sports Bureau (via ESPN).
The record was previously held by Clyde "The Glyde" Drexler, who totaled 438 points over 17 games in March of 1989. Lillard finished November with 459 points in the same number of games.
Lillard is having arguably his best campaign of his young NBA career so far in 2016-17. While his assist average sits at a career low (5.5), the Weber State product possesses career-high averages in points (28.1), rebounds (5.0) and field-goal percentage (47.0). He also sports a career-high 25.83 player efficiency rating.
The star guard has failed to reach double-digit scoring just once this season and has topped 20 points in 15 of the team's 20 total contests.
Despite his consistent nightly efforts, Portland owns just a 10-10 record through the first 20 tilts this season. The team's current record places them in a tie with the Los Angeles Lakers for the eighth spot in the Western Conference. However, the Blazers have dropped six of their last nine games.
Portland squares off against the Miami Heat on Saturday with an opportunity to earn a positive record again after recently falling below the .500 mark. However, they will then embark on a five-game road trip and the team plays eight of its next 10 contests away from the Moda Center.
It may be a challenge for the club to compete in the playoffs this season. If they do, Lillard will likely be a key component in any success and has certainly gotten off to a historic start early on to keep the Blazers afloat.
