Kings vs. 76ers Postponed Due to Moisture on Court
The Philadelphia 76ers were slated to host the Sacramento Kings at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday night, but the game was postponed because of excess condensation on the floor of the Wells Fargo Center, according to the Kings' official Twitter account.
Once the announcement was official, Sixers center Joel Embiid and the Kings' Twitter account reacted to the news:
"Well The court was tanking tonight.... #TrustTheProcess
— Joel Embiid (@JoelEmbiid) December 1, 2016"
The arena, which houses both the Sixers and Philadelphia Flyers, reportedly experienced problems after heat in the building caused the ice below the hardwood to produce condensation, per Philadelphia Magazine's Derek Bodner. The Flyers hosted the Boston Bruins on Tuesday evening and secured a 3-2 shootout victory.
The Philadelphia Inquirer's Keith Pompey relayed on-site video that showed just how wet the court was prior to the decision:
During the delay, video emerged of Kings center DeMarcus Cousins attempting to expedite the drying process by mopping wet parts of the court:
The postponement of Wednesday's game comes as a bit of a disappointment for the Sixers since they announced pregame that Joel Embiid's playing-time restriction was bumped up from 24 to 28 minutes.
However, watching the prized center potentially slip and fall on a dangerous playing surface would have been a scary proposition.
But beyond Embiid—who was plagued by serious foot injuries that required surgery over the past two seasons—the health and safety of all players involved rightly remained of the utmost importance.
As far as a makeup game is concerned, CSN Philly's Dei Lynam noted that neither team is slated to play Thursday night. However, she added that a concert is scheduled for Thursday evening at the Wells Fargo Center.
According to Kings sideline reporter Kayte Christensen, Sacramento general manager Vlade Divac expects the NBA could try to fit a makeup game into the team's open window on its seven-game East Coast road trip in January based on the way the league typically handles rescheduling.
