Cavaliers Spent Summer Reliving Championship by Rewatching Game 7 of Finals
June 19, 2016.
That is a date nobody in Cleveland will ever forget. Not fans, and certainly not any members of the Cavaliers.
On that date, LeBron James and Co. broke Cleveland's title drought by completing a 3-1 series comeback and pulling out an epic 93-89 victory over the Golden State Warriors in Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals. That marked the first championship in franchise history as well as the first title by any of the city's major three sports teams in 52 years.
Knowing all of that, you can understand why the Cavaliers have relived that moment as often as possible.
According to ESPN.com's Brian Windhorst, several Cavaliers players have spent their offseason watching that game on repeat. And yes, the man who knocked down the game-winning shot, Kyrie Irving, is one of them:
"I was rewatching the games and talking to my teammates about it, sending them snapchats of me watching. I got chills. My stomach was dropping knowing the ball is going in but knowing exactly, emotionally how I felt at the time. It still gets me excited thinking about it. It's such a huge moment for not only Cleveland but our team, our families, our friends.
"
He is far from alone in reliving the glory. James has also sat down to relive the night he fulfilled his career-long promise to his home state.
"I've seen it a few times," James said, per Windhorst. "It was on NBA TV throughout the summer. I watch it from a fan's perspective. I see what we could've done better, but I also watch it for enjoyment, to see those three zeros on the clock."
James' block and Irving's shot will always be remembered among the greatest clutch plays in NBA history. But as always, they wouldn't be the reigning champs without the help of their teammates, who have also been playing the series-clinching victory on loop.
"I've watched it over and over," Iman Shumpert said. "Oh, it was enjoyable."
It's hard to blame them. Capping off the greatest comeback in NBA history with a thrilling victory over the greatest regular-season team the league has ever seen is something to savor. Pretty much everyone in Cleveland has spent the summer celebrating the championship, so why shouldn't the players?
The Cavaliers have had a few months to bask in the glory, but now it's time for them to get back to work and defend their title. Nobody will ever be able to take their championship from them, but it is now about to be a thing of the past. Once the ring ceremony on opening night is over, it's time to move on and turn the attention to the 2016-17 season. Because even if they haven't watched film of Game 7, you better believe the Warriors remember the way their season ended.
