Dwight Powell Reportedly Re-Signs with Mavericks: Contract Details and Reaction

Timothy RappJul 3, 2016

The Dallas Mavericks re-signed power forward Dwight Powell to a four-year deal worth $37-plus million on Sunday, according to Shams Charania of The Vertical.

The fourth year of Powell's deal features a player option, per Charania.

Dwain Price of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram added that the deal features a no-trade clause.

Buzz: Mitch a 'Priority' for Knicks

Powell, 24, averaged 5.8 points and 4.0 rebounds in 14.4 minutes per game for the Mavericks in the 2015-16 campaign, appearing in 69 total contests (two starts). His high motor, burgeoning skill and ability to crash the glass and make an impact as a rebounder made him a popular target in free agency.

It also threatened to price him out of the Mavericks' budget, especially considering there are still questions about just how high Powell's ceiling is, whether he'll ever develop a post-up game and if his less than physical style of play will hamper him in the long run.

Ultimately, however, Dallas decided that his potential upside was worth keeping in the organization.

Given his limited role with Dallas in 2015-16, Powell is still undoubtedly a work in progress. But his size (6'11", 240 lbs), ability to rebound and obvious potential—even if he'll likely never become a star—make him an important re-signing for Dallas.

All things considered, Powell has overachieved since being the 45th overall selection in the 2014 NBA draft. The Mavericks will hope he continues to grow and overachieve, as he could be one of the sneakier signings of free agency this year if he takes a step forward in 2016-17.
