Raptors' Parent Company Reportedly Projects Price for Jersey Advertisements

Matt FitzgeraldApr 5, 2016

The target price for advertisement space on the Toronto Raptors' jerseys is reportedly between $4 million and $5 million, according to estimates by executives from Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, the team's parent company.

TSN's Rich Westhead reported the news Tuesday, adding that the NBA Board of Governors is "expected" to vote later in April on whether to feature ads on jerseys for the 2017-18 season.

Per Westhead, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment has been giving sales pitches to corporations in Canada for two-and-a-half-inch-diameter logos to display on jerseys but is concerned that smaller-market NBA teams may undercut the $5 million figure as they attempt to secure their own jersey sponsorships.

Having advertisements on jerseys has been discussed for years but is still apparently a couple of seasons away from coming to fruition.

The NBA moved its logo to the backs of jerseys prior to the 2014-15 season, which was thought to be a sign that ad logos were imminent. For this year's All-Star Game in Toronto, players wore Kia logos on their jerseys.

ESPN.com's Darren Rovell and Brian Windhorst reported in February that the NBA planning committee was seeking teams' input regarding corporate logos on jerseys. The feedback would determine whether the issue lands on the agenda of this month's Board of Governors meeting.

A source indicated to Westhead that the relationship between jersey ads and NBA revenue sharing is currently uncertain.
