NBA Rumors: Analyzing Buzz on Glen Davis, Mike James and More

Chris RolingJul 23, 2015

Big names may be off the market and LeBron James' Hollywood pursuits may clog the headlines, but there is still plenty of action on the Association's rumor mill.

Fresh off the mill comes rumblings of bidding wars, free-agency shockers and teams even looking to improve after coming away impressed by some of the Las Vegas Summer League's top names.

In other words, it's an exciting time for a dead period in most years. As fans continue to figure out after surprise after surprise, this isn't most years in the NBA's ever-developing arms race.

The Glen Davis Sweepstakes

Yes, it is the point of the offseason when Glen Davis becomes the biggest name on the market (he's the Big Baby, after all) and perhaps even incites a bidding war.

Conventional wisdom said Davis would re-up with the Los Angeles Clippers, but coach Doc Rivers and the front office have been slow to do much of anything. Thank a guy by the name of DeAndre Jordan.

Still, it sounds like the plan, although Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times suggested they may not be alone:

Davis spent a year and change with the Clippers providing key depth behind Blake Griffin.

It's interesting to hear the Milwaukee Bucks pop up, though. The team doesn't have much in the way of depth behind Jabari Parker, so pursuing a veteran like Davis would not seem to be a bad idea.

Really, one has to wonder how much room there is for Davis with the Clippers anyway. Griffin is the starter, Jordan is back and the team also added Josh Smith.

For now, it sounds like a two-team race. If both drag their feet, more could join the fray.

Mike James' Market Heats Up

As far as players who made the most of their NBA Summer League trips go, Mike James stands as the example.

James suited up for the Phoenix Suns in Las Vegas and, alongside rookie Devin Booker, helped the team get through the bracket and to the championship game against the San Antonio Spurs.

Now, he and the Suns lost despite his 32 points, but as RealGM's Shams Charania pointed out, the effort garnered him some interest:

Given James' scoring ability, it's not hard to see why. Sam Vecenie of CBSSports.com was one of many to heap praise on him during the title game:

James, an undrafted free agent in 2012, might think it wise to wait one more year and cash in when cap space rises thanks to a new television deal. The approach makes sense, but so does the counterargument—he should put ink to paper now, because he's 24 and his stock might never be higher.

In other words, James is one of the top storylines to watch in the coming weeks.

The Richard Jefferson Surprise

Remember Richard Jefferson?

It's the time of the offseason when a veteran such as the former Arizona star, a 14-year pro at that, makes a splash via his decisions.

According to ESPN's Marc Stein, it sounds like Jefferson will do so by ignoring the Dallas Mavericks and chasing a ring with the Cleveland Cavaliers:

Who can blame him? The Jordan deal fell through. All the sudden, the 35-year-old guard was stuck on a roster with Deron Williams at point, a recovering Wesley Matthews at shooting guard and Zaza Pachulia starting at center.

As Jason Lloyd of Ohio.com detailed, the Mavericks allowed the veteran to pursue other options:

"

Jefferson quickly agreed to a deal to return to the Mavericks for the veteran’s minimum at the start of free agency and even helped the Mavericks in their recruitment of free-agent center DeAndre Jordan. But when the Mavericks’ deal with Jordan fell through, the Mavs allowed Jefferson to seek a better situation.

"

Classy, and it's easy to see where he fits if the deal goes final.

The Cavaliers need a veteran behind James besides Mike Miller and Cedi Osman. Jefferson's ability to play smart, lead by example and knock down shots at an efficient clip—he shot 44 percent from the floor last year—fits well when the King decides to rest.

Jefferson and the Cavaliers want the same thing, and it sounds like it took one other organization granting a pardon to let it happen.
